Welcome! This forum has a treasure trove of great info – Scouters helping Scouters! Just a heads up, though - all content, information, and opinions shared on this forum are those of the author, not the BSA.
When I am recording camping days/nights for my Pack, and I record by individuals, there is no option at the bottom to basically add “camping nights by others not listed.” (I believe this feature does exist for the hiking miles.)
The reason we need this is, when they sign up for scoutbook, many of our scouts only sign up with one parent in the online system. So only that parent shows up on our roster, but if the other parent attends the campout, I would like to record that as a “camping night” in general for the pack. (At the end of the year, we use the total “camping nights” as a statistic for recruitment - “our pack collectively camped 102 nights this year” or whatever. )
That seems like overkill, especially when we’re talking siblings who aren’t joining scouts. Is it really so hard to get the “and everyone else box” feature added when the code is clearly already there for hiking miles?
What is the business reason for recording non-member youth to Campouts? The purpose of the log is to record nights for award purposes.
For Cub Scouts, parents should have a Scouting America Member ID and a relationship to the Scout in order to camp so they would be listed. Adults that are not parents of attending Cub Scouts MUST be registered in order to stay over night.
For all other programs, all adults staying over night must be registered with the unit.
In both cases, everyone attending should be selectable.
The point is for tracking unit metrics. (How many nights has this unit camped? how many hours of service have they completed? How many miles have they hiked?)
Logs are solely for Individuals - unit logs are not recorded. That would need to be your system or chart.
The only exception is Eagle Projects and external volunteers which is recorded for financial reasons. And that is not a Log but a line on Eagle Application
