Can't add email to user profile

I have a person that was a scout and is now 18 so has registered as an adult. His profile updated to Unit College Reserve. There is no email in the profile so I wanted to add it but I am getting a message that the email address already is assigned to another id. Can you help me fix this? Thank you.
