Is there a way to disable parents from logging activities such as hiking and camping?
@JeremyGinsberg - no there not but those entries should come up as needing approval and a discussion had
Yes, they do, but we keep telling families we don’t want them to load in first.
@JeremyGinsberg - do you approve or delete the entries? It really is no diffe re nt than a scout entering items in their handbook
It is the Scouts Logs not the units. It is working as National desires.
This is regarding a Cub Scout Pack and the person responsible for our Hiking Program, where we use the activity log to track miles for awards. He wants people to email him proof of the hike and related details. He’d prefer not to have these in Scoutbook first, as he wants an email, and then he would put them in. He also prefers to group personal hikes as one entry per month.
Understood it is working by design. Was wanting to see if it could be disabled by unit preference, but it sounds like no.
If it is not Approved it is not considered official in Scouting Reports or counting
@JeremyGinsberg - seems a bit extreme for cub scouting’s do your best.
Everyone has their own process, and when you are tracking it for recognition, competitions, and prizes, the unit has unfortunately faced some challenges, and parents have not always been trustworthy. Many of the decisions made in our systems don’t always take into account the full voice of scouting.
Scouting America policy is that parents are allowed to enter activities and advancement/award completions into Scoutbook on behalf of their Scouts. You will need to work through your council staff if you believe this policy should be changed.
I understand the frustrations of parents not being trustworthy. I think that the best approach to this would be that your Hiking Program Coordinator would just adapt to the process that the program allows. With that said if it were me I would advise the parents that they have 1 week to provide the proof of their activity or the record would be rejected. Approving things once proof is provided would be much easier than to enter all the data for every scout. To be honest I think many leaders would prefer to have parents, and even some of the other Den Leaders that are playing as active a roll as it sounds like yours are.
Thanks - We have a process that works; just trying to see if we could mitigate duplication and inaccurate reporting that are occurring. We will work with what has been provided.
