Do not have permissions as a leader or MBC in Scoutbook Plus

I do not seem to have permission either as a leader or merit badge councilor in ScoutBook Plus. Who can change this and how?

Thank you.

@MatthewTracy - are you not seeing the merit badge profile in the upper right and selecting that does not give you the merit badge page ? As far as leader.. what is your role in the unit and there you do not see the MB Counselors item in the left menu

@MatthewTracy well in SB you are an MBC and Committee Member - your 2 registered postiions

I am the advancement coordinator and assistant scout master for my troop and I also do not have permission to assign merit badge counselors. I can see the counselors and when trying to assign I get an error that reads, “Your position and related permissions do not allow you to perform this action”. How does this get resolved?

@RobertLyles1 yes neither of those positions give you the MBC Search Permission - it would need to be added by leaders in unit

A major focus of the migration to Scoutbook Plus is to have positions mirror the positions shown in My.Scouting to ensure positions were reflected accurately in both platforms. The main purpose it to honor the guidance of our charter organizations and the positions they approve. Therefore, Scoutbook Plus does not use Legacy Scoutbook positions. Registered positions are used to provide base permissions. Some additional permissions can be added by the unit, however, there are restrictions on what can be given. See the updated Scoutbook_Permissions.pdf and the Scoutbook Plus permissions video for more details.

Take a look at the permission guide. Have a key 3 add the necessary access. If they aren’t sure how, take a look at the help and permissions. Scoutbook Plus Permissions - Scoutbook Knowledge Base

So many things that need fixing.

  1. I can only see the contact information of some of the people in the MBC list, others it says that I don’t have permission.
  2. Everyone in my area is listed as living in ‘Eagle, MI’ including people that I know personally who do not live in Eagle, MI. Which is also well outside of the search radius I selected, by maybe 100 miles.
  3. Maybe we’re the only Troop where Scouts ask the Scoutmaster for permission to start a new MB and when that is granted the contact information of the MBC is giving to the Scout so that they can reach out and respectfully ask for help from the MBC. The problem with this is that the list of MBC’s that come up from the search show information I don’t need, but not what I need, the contact information.
  4. Just to follow on my previous point. I don’t need their ID number. If their YPT/SYT is out of date, don’t show them.
  5. Does anyone search for MBC’s who are Busy?
  6. Why do we have the District and Council criteria?

@ChristopherCobb - if i recall correctly the council/district thing was on legacy search and in some areas the MBC are maintained by district. The SYT with a cation are those who will have an expiration date that is 30 to 60 days out so hovering over the contact info is blocked. If they are expired they will not show. The busy was also in the search in legacy.

This appears to happen on MBCs outside of your council. Have you seen this happen on an MBC inside your council?

  • Everyone in my area is listed as living in ‘Eagle, MI’ including people that I know personally who do not live in Eagle, MI. Which is also well outside of the search radius I selected, by maybe 100 miles.

This has been reproduced and reported. Watch the change log for an announcement of a fix.

We have suggested Member ID be removed. An MBC with expired SYT will not appear in the search results. Icons indicate SYT status. For example :warning: indicates SYT expires in 31 to 60 days.

  • Does anyone search for MBC’s who are Busy?

Yes

  • Why do we have the District and Council criteria?

Often leaders only want to suggest MBCs that are located in the Scout’s district or Council. I have identified and reported an issue with the District selection.

The transition from legacy to plus would have been the perfect time to eliminate things that were there ‘because we’ve always done it that way’.

So MBC’s need to renew SYT annually, but for 2 months or 1/6th of that period their contact information is blocked? What percentage of people renew/update their SYT more than 60 days before it expires? How many more MBC’s do we now need because some percentage are blocked even though they are completely in compliance?

@ChristopherCobb - I was actually mistaken about the 30-60 contact info.. it appears to be certain MBC that where seemingly there is not contact info the error banner is presented. Yes it would be a perfect time to move on from legacy items, but I am not in the development team.

  1. Yes, including someone I know and who Scouts from our Troop have used before. And my search was within a 5 or 10 mile radius of my zip which would only include an area inside my Council.
  2. Ok.
  3. I figured it out, but why the extra step? Why make it less useful?
  4. Are they suggesting that we don’t use MBC’s who are fully compliant with SYT and will be for another 2 months? If we’re worried about the SYT expiring before the MB is complete then should the warning be at least as long as the longest MB, like Family Life?
  5. Why?
  6. Why would a leader want that?

@ChristopherCobb

The SYT warning is not the cause of contact information being blocked. We need the developers to investigate the reason but I have been able to access contact information for MBCs with the :warning:.

Were you part of the decision making process to keep them or were you just guessing that they were there because they had been in legacy?

@ChristopherCobb - I was not part of the decision process and I did not actively search for mbc except when trying to assist users on the forums. I do not appreciate the tone. I am just a volunteer trying to help others.

@ChristopherCobb

  • Yes, including someone I know and who Scouts from our Troop have used before. And my search was within a 5 or 10 mile radius of my zip which would only include an area inside my Council.

As I said in my previous post, we need the developers to investigate why some MBCs are producing the error when trying to get contact information.

  • I figured it out, but why the extra step? Why make it less useful?

A leader had to click on the MBC’s name in legacy to get contact information. With Scoutbook+ you can export a csv of your search results so you can get the contact information that way too.

  • Are they suggesting that we don’t use MBC’s who are fully compliant with SYT and will be for another 2 months? If we’re worried about the SYT expiring before the MB is complete then should the warning be at least as long as the longest MB, like Family Life?

No, they are just trying to let you know that the MBC’s SYT is expiring soon. Some units may want to avoid MBC’s that are close to expiring.

  • Why?

I know of units that, after receiving a Blue Card, look to see if the person who signed is an MBC. If they are listed as busy and you only search for available, you won’t find them. There could be other reasons.

  • Why would a leader want that?

You would need to ask those leaders.
