I have tried sending emails to our whole pack through the Messaging tab in Scoutbook Plus. Emails are never received.

I sent a test email to myself and never received it.

Last week when I had this problem I went to Legacy Scoutbook and sent the emails from there but now I see that that option has been removed from Legacy Scoutbook.

Is there a solution for this problem? I prefer to use Scoutbook and do not want to return to Google Groups for Pack communications.

@WorthLutz - i have just sent a test email from the crew and troop and both were received. Does it say email sent in a green pop-up notification ?

@Stephen_Hornak yes the “email sent” pop up shows every time. I sent several last week and several today. None ever arrive. Last week there was an option in Legacy Scoutbook to send out emails and it worked fine. Now I don’t see that option.

If the back end code has changed from the Legacy version to Scoutbook Plus then someone should compare the two to see if the changes are making Scoutbook Plus unreliable.

Or at least put messaging back into Legacy Scoutbook until this is resolved.

@WorthLutz - have you check your spam and junk folders for the email. The emails come from [scoutbook.scouting.org](http://scoutbook.scouting.org) with a [noreply@scouting.org](mailto:noreply@scouting.org). I have received my test emails and emails from our SPL. So the system is sending.

I still cannot get email from Scoutbook Plus. I tried sending myself one today and got the green Email Sent message. I never received the email. It’s not in the junk or spam folders.

We have reverted to doing Reply All to OLD emails to contact our pack members. If this cannot be fixed or messaging put back into Scoutbook Legacy where it worked, we are going back to Google Groups or something similar.

I would be willing to work with the Scouting America IT group to help test and debug but do not know how to contact them.

There’s no direct access to the national team for volunteers. The only access is indirect via the SUAC (if it’s a SB+ issue) or via council professional staff filing a MemberCare ticket with national.

A couple of clarifying questions:

1. Is it just you from your pack whose emails aren’t sending properly, or are others in your pack seeing the same issue? Since folks in different units (e.g. Stephen) are seeing it working, the first step is likely to identify the extent of the problem (i.e. limited to one user, limited to N users, limited one unit, limited to N units, etc). The same question is likely germane for both @Britt_Baubie and @BERNICEKENDALL: are y’all able to help clarify whether it’s just y’all in your units whose emails aren’t going out, or is it others in the unit as well?
2. Do you not receive emails sent by others as well, or are you only not receiving the messages you’re sending out? The difference could help isolate whether the issue is restricted to the sending of emails (i.e. you send an email via SB+, but since it’s not sending properly when you send you don’t get it vs.you don’t get any emails from SB+).
3. Is it just restricted to the Messaging interface, or are you also not receiving event reminders? The same question for Britt & Bernice. This would help identify if it’s exclusively related to the Messaging interface or if it’s something shared by both the reminder system and the Messaging system.

I’m hoping this data might help the devs narrow down what to look at. Since the system seems to be working for some folks but not others, there must be something that distinguishes the users who are having issues from those who are not. Figuring out what that shared characteristic is would be ideal. For example, if everyone having issues shared a particular registered position or positions (e.g. CM, SM, COR, MC, etc), or was jointly holding both a registered Key 3 role (CM/SM, CC, COR) plus being a Key 3 delegate (which isn’t necessary and is known to cause issues), that might help identify what to fix and how it needs to be fixed.

What is SUAC?

It is not just me having problems sending emails. We do not receive emails others send. We reverted to Legacy Scoutbook in the past but that option has been removed. By Googling this problem, it seems that the problem with Scoutbook Plus has been going on for some time now.

As a software developer, I do not think the problem is who the user is or what registered position a user has. My guess is the problem is in the server trying to deliver the emails.

The client program in the browser, Scoutbook Plus, shows a popup stating “Email Sent”. This probably means that the backend server Mail Transfer Agent(MTA) has accepted the email and checked for syntax errors and successfully passed the email to the local mail queue. This just means that the email addresses and other data are formatted correctly. The backend server would then send to the Scoutbook Plus client an “email sent successfully” message so the user can be notified.

The “email sent” only means the the email made it to the local email queue. The error is probably happens as the local mail queue tries to send the email on to the recipients. The problem may be found by looking at the mail logs in the server.

As a developer it would help if I could have user send an email and I could watch the tail end of the log at that moment to see what happens. Once I see the email attempt to go out I could then search for other log entries related to that email. Otherwise I can just scan through pages and pages of logs looking for something strange not knowing which email has a problem.

It is my understanding that this forum is the only way to submit bugs to Scoutbook Plus. I will again offer my time to help debug this problem if a developer wants some help. I really would like this to work.

SUAC is the Scoutbook User Advisory Council, the volunteers who have contact with the SB+ devs. You’ll see them around the boards and their avatar has a logo in the bottom right corner:

All I’m trying to do is get a clear problem statement & help narrow down is whether the issue is unique to certain accounts as opposed to everyone in certain units. It sounds like the answer is yes it’s certain accounts but not all, assuming I understand correctly that others in your unit are sending and receiving emails correctly. I was also trying to narrow down if it’s certain accounts not able to send, not able to receive messages that others have received, or both. It sounds like in your case it’s both.

Do I correctly understand that:

1. others in your unit are successfully sending and receiving messages?
2. you are not receiving messages sent by others in your unit that others in your unit are receiving?

Like you, I’m just on the user side, so I can’t see the back end either. I help the SUAC in collecting info so that they can pass it along to the devs to try to identify where the issue is actually happening. As you noted, blindly sifting the mail logs isn’t a fruitful exercise. Knowing which users are seeing the issue (and potentially which are not from the same unit), as well as exactly what the issues are – can’t send, can send but aren’t receiving (i.e. others get your messages but not you), or can neither send nor receive – can help identify where to look for the root problem.

The only other alternative is to ask your council professionals to submit a MemberCare ticket to national. For SB±related issues, going via the forums is generally faster since the SUAC volunteers can talk directly to the devs. For other [scouting.org](http://scouting.org) sites, it has to be submitted through council professionals since the national teams handling those don’t take bug reports from SUAC.

It looks like @edavignon and @DonovanMcNeil were responding in threads related to email issues. Does this look like a known reported issue that devs have on their list to y’all?

Something changed and all the test emails I sent last week showed up today.

I’m thinking they were stuck in a queue somewhere and finally got processed.

I’ll keep trying and see if the problem is fixed.

Fingers crossed…

@WorthLutz - I would check the headers for the timestamps to see when [scouting.org](http://scouting.org) passed it off to your provider.
