Welcome! This forum has a treasure trove of great info – Scouters helping Scouters! Just a heads up, though - all content, information, and opinions shared on this forum are those of the author, not the BSA.
Maybe I am unsure the logic that is in place for the “Total Last Year” in the Membership portion of the Unit Dashboard. I have seem to noticed over the month of September that for the unit here, Pack 643 in Three Fires (127), it started September as 40 and has crawled down to now 37. I thought there was a snapshot each month that this is driven by but it seems to keep adjusting throughout the month.
But keep in mind this is how we are measuring units these days and if the target is moving daily, becomes hard to use it as a really measure. I sent it over to our Council Commissioner.
Ive been tracking these numbers month to month for over a year and logging it separately to understand our growth trends in our district and what was being reported to council. I think these numbers are coming from the actual official on roster youth (my.scouting roster) you have for that calendar year. Dropped scouts do affect these numbers BUT I have also noticed a fluctuation. About 8-10 months ago there was a spike in several units doubling or tripling the total. Never found out what it was but I reported it to my council registrar and they put in a membercare ticket. 6 months later the numbers dropped and returned to normal with no explanation. Councils monitor these number carefully because they have a national gain % that are actively tracking. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone found a way to skew those outliers in their favor.
That the number is changing throughout the month is a bit odd since they only have monthly snapshots and start / end date are by month, not by day. So yes, someone is refreshing the data with some updated filters for sure.
