Spoken with several units in the district and they can no see the toggle for the Unit Visit for the Unit pin??? any ideas
@AmeeBailey-Speck - I do not see that toggle nor do I recall seeing anything documented about it. Since this my.scouting.org you would need your council registrar to enter a member care ticket
The trial visit toggle was definitely there when these options rolled out in August. I remember discussing it with several units and using the toggle for one or two of them. Now it is missing from all the units I can see.
My guess is that this was removed intentionally. I can think of two reasons:
-
“Trial visit encouraged” was the wording displayed, I believe, and that is odd phrasing that seem to discourage online applications (a negative) as opposed to a more neutral or positive phrasing, such as “Guests welcome” or “Trial visitors welcome.”
-
Units would be foolish to not allow trial visits. I don’t know any units that would turn away a youth who wants to check it out before signing up. The only exception might be the small proportion of units that only accept members from their CO’s congregation, but that’s pretty rare and they wouldn’t be advertising on BeAScout.org anyway.
@WhitneyD that is what I recall - on our pin info we have (and have had for years) “We meet every Monday at 7pm, address, EVERYONE is welcome to come and visit.”
Part of the problem is that while we meet at the advertised day of the week around 40 times a year, there are holiday weeks, courts of honor (not very great as an entry point), and going elsewhere for swimming, biking, sports in the park, etc. I don’t think it is helpful to tell people to just show up.
I forget how many characters are available, but “Visit our website for more information and to check for alternative meeting locations!” could be reasonably effective.
Or something like: please contact us before visiting so we know to expect you.
My SPLs always knew one of their main jobs was to be paying attention and if someone new came in they were to go and greet them immediately, or have an assigned delegate to do it, so the guest felt welcomed and knew what was going on. It worked well, lol now drives me nuts to be at a meeting and see a guest come in and just sit in a corner not knowing what to do.
Whitney, Thank you confirming that you do not see the option any more either. Our unit commissioner was asking us to update the pin since it was on their check list of items needing to be completed. This was why I asked in the first place.
For the other responses, I am aware that we can add text to our unit description (which we already had language), but that does not resolve the question asked or assist me in responding to our unit commissioner. Thanks
@AmeeBailey-Speck - nobody on the forums can resolve the issue
