If it helps at all, my son is in the exact same situation. He just crossed over and COVID-19 started. I have been a Den Leader, Pack Committee Chair and now at Asst. Scoutmaster. I attended Woodbadge as well as a scout when I was a boy. I have some experience with how scouting works and what it looks like.
My son has been doing Eagle Required Online Merit badges during the entire COVID-19. He has taken them from all across the country and I have yet to feel like he is getting some sort of tone downed version. He has spent hours and hours on Zoom, Google Classrooms and Go-To Meetings. He then spends hours and hours and hours doing the requirements, documenting them, submitting them back to the counselor (and they all want you to submit in a different way).
I have seen counselors go through the Merit Badge information over the course of four days and then schedule weekly meetings to check back and encourage kids to get them done.
All in all, it has been a great experience and has kept him fully engaged in scouting. He is disappointed that he hasn’t gotten his Scout rank yet, but he is happy that he has gotten so much work down for his Star and Life Ranks because of the Merit Badges.
Finally, Personal Fitness, Family Life and Personal Management have been a God Send during these tough crazy times. These three merit badges have brought our family together as we look at budgets, chores, exercise together, etc.
I hope that helps rest your fears about what is happening with Online Merit Badges.
