Breakpoints - "Laptop" view deprecates logo/menu

I’ve noticed that breakpoints are automatically set for desktop, laptop, tablet, and mobile through Elementor. Good so far. The theme has a menu and logo in the header that shows for desktop and is deprecated for mobile. Also good.
The theme actually also deprecates the menu and logo for laptop. (And tablet). So my laptop experience looks like my mobile or tablet experience.
How do I get into the backend to force the desktop header (menu and logo) to show up on the laptop?

@GretchenScheiman - what is your view set for on the laptop browser? I gather you are only seeing the hamburgers icon instead of the menu.

Hi Stephen, I am seeing hamburger only. I actually checked and in the WP backend, on my 27" monitor, if I roll through the views I can see that “laptop” is set specifically to mimic the tablet and mobile settings - so even if I set breakpoints for laptop correctly, it is designed to not show the desktop menu. I attempted to push the desktop breakpoint down to near-tablet, and it still forced me to the laptop view. I deleted the laptop breakpoints, but that didn’t help either.

I think the best way to solve this is to allow the laptop view to display the desktop menu/logo header, but I don’t know how. Or if there is another solution.

This is on the new (red) theme.

@GretchenScheiman - I think your best bet is to direct your inquiry to either the BSA Marketing team that provides the WordPress Theme and or Wordpress themselves. The forums are volunteers that may or may not have exposure to working with the Council websites or the theme.

Note we are trying to build up this community as this category has just launched. Hopefully we’ll see more council website editors/maintainers here soon!

@awg - ah got it. Hopefully it gathers some traffic

open source developer contributor etc here … and Scouter.

Just discovered this new Forum area on WP Themes yay! … and I’ll be sharing/checking back.

@Stephen_Hornak I suspect there are a number of professionals and volunteers working on Council websites and themes.
And I hope this topic gets more traffic too!

for OP @GretchenScheiman did you ever make headway on this or resolve the issue?

No, I did not. And I’ve run into this with Elementor before. It seems to be limited to a laptop view when using a dual monitor. So I’m trying to test it to see if it’s something I actually need to worry about.

Happy to see a developer here!

Is there any way to fix this? It’s still an issue.

Here’s an image showing the breakpoints I wound up enabling. It looks like laptop now functions as intended. I can’t remember if I changed any other settings.

Unfortunately, adding a laptop breakpoint was not enough to work. If you ever find out what else you changed, please let me know.

Hi Nathan, this has been bugging me - I actually remember the issue now. I had been working on the website for my then employer at the same time I was working on the council site. Both Elementor. This is related to how some laptops use a larger magnification to offset a better screen resolution. Here’s a link to an article that does some of the math, and has a recommended solution (sadly, not a number but a guide to research you can do to arrive at your number).

Thanks for the resource, I can see that my Windows has 150% magnification setting my usable screen size to 1280. I also see that the theme breaks to desktop menu at 1330 pixels. Unfortunately, none of breakpoint settings or custom CSS with my limited coding knowledge is fixing this. I reached out to the development team, and they got back to me with this:

Thank you for your email. We are aware of this. While it is not ideal, our audit of many council websites prior to this theme release demonstrated that some councils had too many menu items in the navigation bar to all fit on one horizontal line. So in order to prevent 2 horizontal lines of navigation on smaller desktop sizes, we set the breakpoint at a higher resolution. We understand this is not an ideal experience and plan to brainstorm other solutions in the next council release.
