Mile Swim award changes

Hello, there are new requirements for the Mile Swim BSA Award. Mile Swim BSA award updated for Summer 2024 | Boy Scouts of America

When will SB be updated with these new requirements?

Thank You!

UPDATED BSA Mile Swim Award Requirements:

  1. Successfully complete the BSA swimmer test: Jump feetfirst into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be completed in one swim without stops and must include at least one sharp turn.
  2. Learn through discussion and application how skill, stamina, stroke selection, and pace influence distance swimming.
  3. Pre-qualify for the mile by either swimming continuously for ΒΌ mile or otherwise demonstrating ability to the satisfaction of a counselor approved by the local council.
  4. Swim one mile under safe conditions over a course approved by the counselor supervising the swim.

@MindyDoerr this is noted - always nice when committees change things without telling other departments

Sorry about that Donovan. Will there be 2 criteria now like we see for old versions of the merit badge?

Thank You!

I have a question about this. At summer camp, our unit had an AOL complete the mile swim. How can this be recorded? All Cubs from Bears (3rd grade) up part of their swimming elective includes the BSA swim test.

Thanks!

This is more of a program question, than a software question. According to https://www.scouting.org/awards/awards-central/mile-swim/, the Mile Swim award is open to Scouts BSA, Venturers, Sea Scouts, Explorers and associated scouters.

I would reach out to your local council/district professionals with more questions about whether or not a Cub Scout youth can receive this award.

@AmyPosey Cubs are not eligible for the award - sorry - Mile Swim BSA | Boy Scouts of America - Council MIGHT be able to enter it but am not sure

I will reach out to Council, if a Cub can pass all the requirements they should be allowed to receive it, I went to look in the Cub Awards and it was not there. Thank you.

@AmyPosey - it is not in cub awards because cubs can not earn it.
