At the end of the school year will Scoutbook automatically promote the scouts to the next grade or do we need to do this manually?

You do it by going to the den page and clicking edit den > advance den. We recommend starting with the current Bear den and working your way down to the Lions to avoid confusion.
And before it is even asked, there is no Arrow of Light Den.

John - for scouts BSA you would have to manually increment them up.
The easiest way to advance grade for a Scout’s BSA Troop is to use the volunteer written and supported Feature Assistant Extension for Scoutbook for Chrome and Firefox. It has a feature to set or increment grade.
Without using the extension, you need to go to each Scout’s profile and advance the grade manually.
