Trying to figure out if there is a bug, or if it is designed this way. And also curious if anyone else has a better work process for confirming MB completion.
I’m Advancement Coordinator and Committee Chair - So, I do have most permissions. I am also an MBC for Family Life, although I am not linked to this particular Scout as his MBC.
The scout is linked to a different MBC for Family Life MB. The scout keeps track of his progress by going into Scoutbook himself and marking requirements completed. I’m good with that.
However, the MBC has not signed off on this MB, and this scouts Family Life MB has just shown up on my “Pending Approval” reports. I feel like unless the MBC approves the MB, that it shouldn’t show up on my Pending Approval. Is this because I also happen to be an MBC for this particular MB? Or is it designed this way?
Usually when I see an MB pop up on my pending approval reports, I go back into Scoutbook to double check the advancement of the scout and ensure that the MBC signed off that the MB is complete. Then I go approve the MB. In this case, I discovered that the MB has not been signed off by the MBC, and I won’t approve.
I guess I’d really like to be able to trust that the system is telling me something is complete that is actually complete. Thoughts on why this is happening or if there is a better way?
Thanks,
Megan
@MeganPirchner is a good question. The answer is not all MBCs use Scoutbook, so we cannot hinder a scouts advancement based on how a MBC chooses to participate.
@MeganPirchner
To add to what Donovan said, I recommend talking to the Scout before approving anything for the Family Life MB. If the Scout’s MBC does not use Scoutbook, then the Scout should provide you with a physical blue card before you approve any requirements or overall completion for this MB. If the Scout’s MBC marks the requirements complete, they will drop off of your Needs Approval report. Only an overall MB that is marked Counselor Approved in SB will remain on the Needs Approval report because per the Guide to Advancement, the Scout is supposed to have a conversation with the Unit Leader (Scoutmaster, Skipper or Crew Advisor) after completing any MB.

Thanks for the quick replies. In this case, the MBC does use Scoutbook for approval (suspect Scout has just not had that final conversation yet). So, from what I read above, the system is designed this way on purpose and I just need to wait it out and leave it alone on the needs approval report until that conversation happens. (I would love if the scouts didn’t mark as approved, but they have minds of their own sometimes, and if the capability is there, they’ll do it)
I don’t plan to approve this, because I am not MBC. As advancement coordinator I just double check the records, since they are rarely using Blue Cards anymore.
Thanks,
Megan
@MeganPirchner - the scout should not be able to mark it approved just completed… just as the would in their own handbooks.
