I see old discussions closed with not much promising any updates. We have scouts working towards the Outdoor Achievement award but it requires tracking of backpacking miles, miles ridden by motorboat, horseback, cycling, etc., & there are hours on the water. These are all BSA activities that we are being asked to track not just something the troop is tracking for a troop specific award. Why did scoutbook limit activity tracking to camping, hiking, and service hours?
That decision was made before the BSA purchased SB (it was true when my unit used it pre-BSA purchase), so there may not be anyone who can answer that specific question anymore.
As you noted, there have been requests to add other types of activities, and that’s somewhere in the BSA IT backlog (with no guarantee of ever being done) per the SUAC folks (again, in prior threads). It sounded like the intention is eventually to add other types of activities (which was the rationale given at the time for moving the logs from native SB to what has now become SB+ when a lot of us whined about the change then). We’re unfortunately just stuck in limbo waiting on the additions to get far enough up in the priority queue to be serviced. I suspect (but have no information either way) that it won’t get done until after the other programs (Scouts BSA, Venturing, Sea Scouting) are migrated onto SB+ and classic SB is fully gone (as is almost-but-not-quite the case for Cub Scouting).
Well, the Scouts can track if they wish to work towards those awards. I look forward to the day that Scoutbook makes it easy, but really if a Scout wants to earn an award, in the end, there is no we. It is the Scout.
