Correct Joining Sequence

For a new scout and parent that have never been in Scouts Before - What are the correct sequence of steps to get them setup. Somethings need to happen…Account Creation on Scoutbook…Scoutbook connections for parent and scout…registration with BSA…Connection to unit…etc. Not quite sure what the correct sequence is anymore. Any help you can give with this list is greatly appreciated.

  1. Submit Application to the Unit

Please help with this list!!!

John,

In principle, when the application is approved by council, the scout account is automatically created and added to the unit. To add a parent, you invite them the usual way.

If you want to get ahead of the process, you have to make sure that the youth’s name and other details in Scoutbook match the application data entered by council exactly. No nicknames, correct date of birth, etc.

For online registration I think the current, perhaps oversimplified, sequence is:

  1. Find and contact a unit at https://beascout.scouting.org/. Prospective new members can also be invited using the online registration system.

  2. Create an account for the adult(s) at https://my.scouting.org/. Parents joining as leaders complete online Youth Protection training course.

  3. Register online and pay national BSA registration dues. The online registration system adds the new Scout (or new adult leader)

  4. Pay local unit dues (if any)

Have I missed anything?

If your council processes applications pretty quickly, it is likely:

  1. Application completed by parent
  2. Application turned into council
  3. Scout automatically comes into Scoutbook
  4. A pack admin goes to the scout’s connections to add parent connections
  5. If the parent wants the scout to have access to their own account, they can give it via the edit profile page

If there is some delay in either turning in the application or processing it, you may decide the following is better:

  1. Application completed by parent
  2. Application turned into council
  3. Use the add scout button to create a new scout account
  4. A pack admin goes to the scout’s connections to add parent connections
  5. If the parent wants the scout to have access to their own account, they can give it via the edit profile page
  6. When the application is processed, the bsa member number should automatically be added to the scout’s profile. This is dependent of an exact match with the info on the application.
