I’ve noticed several recent bug reports receiving the response that Scoutbook is no longer supported. However, until Scoutbook is fully retired, it deserves continued support. Many of us still prefer Scoutbook over advancements.scouting.org because it’s faster, more reliable, and much easier to navigate. That is saying something given it’s extremely old tech stack. Information is more accessible without the constant need to click through multiple layers. With advancements.scouting.org, it too often becomes “wait, wait, quit.”
The new advancement system has been frustrating. It’s slow, frequently buggy, and in our case, even generated incorrect reports, resulting in the wrong patches and awards being ordered. This causes disappointment for Scouts who’ve worked hard to earn their achievements.
One ongoing issue is the missing adventure images. In Scoutbook, they were clear and well-organized. Now, with the new system’s image paths not added to the old one, they appear broken or missing. Ironically, the time you spent responding to bug reports about this issue over the years likely exceeds the effort it would take to simply update the image paths. Correcting this one detail would significantly improve the user experience.
Here’s how it should look if those paths were fixed:
And here’s how it looks now:
When we show parents and Scouts the tools we use, it’s discouraging to have to explain why basic features no longer work. We expect better from Scouting America. Please “be prepared” and support Scoutbook until the new system truly matches or surpasses what it replaced. If you need asp programmers to support the old, let me know.
If you need help improving the performance of a React/Next.js system we can likely help with that too!
