Enhancement Request - Can we give Unit Commissioners to update this on behalf of the unit? Feedback so far is that it has been hard to get the unit to do it, but if a Commissioner confirms the activity, allowing a UC to update it will make the unit’s health stats look much better.
I second that! A lot of units do not record their activity in Scoutbook Plus, so a lot of units will have health stats that are not as ideal as they could be. If a UC or DC could update it on their behalf, it’ll be a big help.
The Unit can also enter their activity on My.Scouting under the Organization Manager, Metrics tab. It just tales one of the Key 3 to enter the date.
Plus, Commissioners should not be doing unit data entry. The metrics are about the unit, not the commissioner.
Lastly, the Outdoor Activity is really an item waiting for Cub Day Camp, Summer Camp, this year. So it will normally be blank until this summer.
@RonaldBlaisdell - While I would agree, if we can get units to maintain these things would be the best practice. However, I would hate to see a unit look deficient eventhought they are doing the work. I am logging a contact in and having that field right in front me to update as well would be beneficial to all parties involved.
The timing has not been clearly defined regarding whether we are adopting a calendar year view or a rolling 12-month view. I believe a rolling approach is more appropriate, considering how the metrics are calculated and the focus on the unit’s overall health. In the case of JTE, a one-time year-end review was used, so an annual view made sense. However, since we are aiming for a more real-time assessment, units should receive credit for events like summer camp 2024, rather than appearing deficient for six months or more until the camp occurs.
And I kinda just answered my own question, the unit connection guide for outdoor activities says -
Did the unit participate in outdoor activities (packs), a long-term outing (troops), a super activity (ships or posts), or a Tier 3 event (crews) within the past 12 months?
Going forward, that is correct. But with the new system, for 2025 it will be updated as of this year’s activity.
I did send your request forward, even if I don’t agree with it.
Appreciate the support @RonaldBlaisdell !
My opinion is that Commissioners should not be entering data for the unit, (unless they are an “Embedded Commissioner”, in which case they can get delegate access) but rather instruct the unit on how to update the information themselves. We’ve had problems in our council, where the Unit pin for Be a Scout gets turned off if the charter is not renewed on time, the a commissioner turned it back on and the contact information was totally wrong. Better leave data entry to individuals who are closer to the situation.
