I understand that Citizenship in Society has been retired, and I can now see it when I look at the merit badges for Scouts who already completed it (it used to completely disappear unless they were under the 2022 Eagle requirements), but it doesn’t show up as an optional merit badge, counting toward either Eagle or palms. I assume this is a bug in Scoutbook, as this merit badge was earned by the Scout and should count toward those things.
@JanetHammond no CIS has ended for for any scout who has not started it IN the Scoutbook Platform. If a scout has started it outside SB, council can enter completions for you. If it is earned in the allowed timeframe (which ends 12/31/26 I think) then it is an elective MB. If not started it cannot be earned as it is no longer a Merit Badge
This is not for Scouts who haven’t started it yet. This is referring to Scouts who COMPLETED it previously. The system is no longer giving them credit for having completed it unless they are under the 2022 Eagle requirements, which will end at the end of this year.
The system is not counting it as an elective merit badge toward Eagle/palms, which is what I think is a bug.
I do not recall the logic, I will have to check with staff when they are back. The whole change was fast and internal, so not sure on the intended outcome.
I can’t see what merit badges are being applied to palms, so I’m not sure if the problem is there, too (when I go into the palms, it shows the merit badges being complete, but not which merit badges those were). I have a Scout who doesn’t have enough merit badges for Eagle without CIS, but if I move him to the current Eagle requirements, it drops CIS altogether - he doesn’t get credit for it as an optional.
Well I know that is exactly why 2022 is there, so use that for the scout
Perhaps it is CIS cannot be used for Eagle.
Scoutbook Plus does not list which MBs are used for Palms, it only counts total number of MBs. 26 MBs for the 1st Palm, 31 for the 2nd Palm, etc. Where are you seeing Palms with a list of MBs?
The only Scouts that should be on Eagle 2022 are those that have only 21 MBs including CIS. All other Scouts that have not earned CIS or Eagle should be on Eagle 2026. CIS will not be used for Eagle but that doesn’t matter because they have enough MBs for Eagle without counting CIS.
I can’t see the merit badges in palms anymore - legacy Scoutbook would show it. I had assumed since CIS isn’t counting as an optional merit badge for Eagle under the current version that it won’t count toward palms either, but that could be an incorrect assumption. If Scoutbook Plus would list the merit badges it’s counting toward each palm, we’d know for sure.
I don’t understand why CIS can’t count as an optional merit badge toward Eagle beyond this year. If a Scout earned that merit badge, it should count. I’ve never heard of a merit badge being retired where a Scout couldn’t count it as an optional merit badge toward Eagle. There are Scouts who have already earned CIS that will not be earning Eagle this year. I think the way the retiring of this merit badge has been handled is very unfair to them if it won’t count beyond this year.
It all has to do with how Scoutbook was built. If a Scout only has 21 MBs they can use Eagle 2022 and CIS will be listed on the app. If a Scout has more than 21 MBs, CIS is not needed for Eagle so other MBs will be listed, even if earned after CIS.
All MBs count towards Eagle palms. None are displayed. All SB does is count the number of Approved MBs. At 26, the first palm is earned, 31 the 2nd etc.
So a Scout who earned CIS but doesn’t complete Eagle this year, will have to earn an extra optional merit badge to get to Eagle starting next year. I still think this is unfair to those Scouts. They EARNED that merit badge. It should count as an optional merit badge toward Eagle - not just this year. Obviously, we’ll have to deal with whatever Scouting America decides to do, no matter how unfair it may be.
No, the 2022 Version of Eagle will remain (or an equivalent) for scouts in this situation - But it is also not another Eagle required - it could be replaced with Fingerprinting, or Underwater Basket weaving.
The way things are worded, it sounds like if a Scout doesn’t earn Eagle by the end of this year, the opportunity to use the 2022 requirements will close. If that is not the case, then there isn’t an issue other than updating the requirements in Scoutbook Plus for those using the 2022 requirements are onerous (you have to go in to every individual requirement and update it there rather than using quick entry). However, if all Scouts must use the new requirements starting in 2027, then my issue still stands. We’ve had Scouts who only earned 21 merit badges make it to Eagle. This especially impacts Scouts who started Scouting later than others. Obviously, if a Scout who earned CIS now has an additional merit badge to earn in order to get to Eagle, we’ll do everything we can to support them in that, but it still seems unfair. No other retired merit badge has gotten this kind of treatment. However you felt about CIS, you shouldn’t be dismissing it so easily. That merit badge took HOURS, effort, and careful thought for the Scout to earn - they should get credit for it.
As I said - it was programmed without us being involved other than us saying the scout earned the MB so it has to count - I would have to get with Devs to understand
This is the fun text we had to work with - See it is the MB that has the 12/31 date - not the eagle version. So basically the 2022 Version or an equivalent will be available about 8 years (the tenure of a Scout in a troop).
So the 2022 Version is still fine after 12/31/26
Thank you for the clarification. It’s very difficult for those of us who support the Scouts on a day-to-day basis to know how the implementation of decisions like this impact what we (and the Scouts) do. It didn’t help that the implementation coincided with the migration of Scoutbook to Scoutbook Plus. It’s been difficult to know what was intended and what may be a bug in the system. It’s been extraordinarily frustrating trying to keep up with it all.
