Lion to Eagle Report

I have asked my Council and no one can figure out a report request I have. We are trying to see if any Scout in our Council has earned the Lion Cub Scout rank and has also earned the rank of Eagle. I am in Council #127 for reference. Anyone from SUAC able to run that report?

@JeremyGinsberg

I doubt there is such a report since Lion and Eagle are from different programs. Scoutbook Plus only has reports by program, not cross program.

Your council could put in a ticket with Scouring America IT Member Care requesting a report be created or a one time list generated for them.

Both the Lion and Eagle ranks show up, along with every other rank, in one’s membership history. Would think this would be queryable but my Council says they don’t know how.

@JeremyGinsberg

Your Council staff have an internal message board where they can ask or they can open a ticket with Scouting America Member Care

Thanks, I will ask them again. It would be helpful to better understand where scouts start the program and where they might drop out. I’m interested in knowing how many earn their Eagle badge after completing the entire program versus those who join later. I had even thought about using this for my Commissioner Project or Thesis.

Don’t forget to “scope” the data for what “the entire program” was for when each program became available. Lions only appeared in 2018(?), and Tiger (cubs) as a rank in 2001-ish? I know Tiger Cubs was a new-ish program when I was a scout back in the dim ages (early 1980s), but I don’t recall exactly when.

Yes, Lion started in 2015, and my son was part of the pilot. I was curious to see if he was among the first Lions to earn Eagle. As the VC for Membership, I also began wondering where we see the most traction—where scouts start, finish, or burnout.

Although Lion was highest rank in cub scouts in the early years - Bobcat, Wolf, Bear and Lion. There will however be a data cut off for anything prior to the scoutnet years.

The national pilot actually started in 2016. As I’m sure you know, most of those scouts are 15 now.

A scout making it to Eagle is a nearly statistically insignificant compared to the number that start the program. I would work with council and get the % of scouts that start a program and quit in the first year - that is 30-50+%.
Why do they quit in the first year?
Bad marketing of activities?
Meeting/Unit inconveniences? Not finding the unit that works best for them?

Once a Scout (more importantly Family) is in for year 2 of a program they are pretty committed, until high school options really come into play.

@jacobfetzer - my son was one of the first in September of 2015. We were the first in our Council.

@DonovanMcNeil - Thanks for the feedback. We are looking at our membership from multiple avenues including what you mentioned but our early retention is OK, it’s later stage, crossover, potential burnout that we are trying to better understand.

There were three councils that started the pilot in fall 2015. I’m assuming you had to enter the Lion rank retroactively?

sorry about the side quest. I know that’s not the main point of your post. Although, it does raise a question of how ranks are tracked during limited pilots. And is the data complete and accurate?

As I understand it Crossover from Cubs to Scouts BSA nationally is a 50% drop in first year. Scouts BSA is such a different program (or should be) from Cubs - some families do not understand it (why didn’t my scout get rank, we have been in one year), or the Camping is so different it is too much for some.
In my troop I can say for crossovers that % held rather true. For Never Scouts that joined it was not that high. It was a very youth led troop so the youth had alot of buyin and ownership, adults facilitated what the SPL wanted to do and achieve. And as an SM, I made it clear advancement was just a tool like camping, you can work it if you want.

Actually, the Lion pilot started in Northern Star Council in Fall 2011. My son earned Lion in 2012 and Eagle in 2024. He is now 20 in his 3rd year of college.

I’m aware. But relative to this post, three councils started in 2015. I was already getting off topic and didn’t want to go further off.

So, how was your son’s lion rank recorded? Was it done so retroactively? Was it only because you were on top of making sure it got recorded, or was there some process that ensured every lion rank was eventually recorded?

Lion didn’t start in 2015. It was repurposed then.
My Pack dissolved before I could earn Lion back in the 1960’s. It was after Bear. Struck me as a little weird they used Lion as all the animals got larger as ranks progressed.
