I have a Star Scout with 10 short term camping nights and two long term camps, one 5 nights and one 7 nights. She should be eligible for OA, right? In Scoutbook Plus her activity logs show the correct number of nights, but she is listed as ineligible in the OA report. What gives?
OA eligibility is based on two factors:
At least First Class (for a troop) and at least 10 short-term nights and at least 5 long-term nights in the preceding two years. Do the camping nights all fall in that time window?
Yes. The one of the long term camps was June of 2025 and the other was June of 2024.
Do the 10 short term nights also have to be in the past 2 years?
Yes. All of the “qualifying” camping nights for OA eligibility must be within the last two years.
The report should indicate how many nights are withing the qualifying period (I think? It definitely used to.)
That explains it then. 2 of her nights are From Feb 2024. I was wondering why she was on the eligibility report last week but not today.
Assuming we camp some more, are the two years the two preceding election? Or induction?
Election. The requirements are about qualifying for election by your unit. Once elected, a candidate has a period of time (18 months currently) to complete the induction weekend.
There’s all sorts of info available at the OA’s website. For example, the membership requirements are here:
https://oa-scouting.org/about/membership
ETA: If you have questions about applying the eligibility requirements in specific cases, I would reach out to your local OA lodge/chapter adviser. They’re always happy to help with getting elections running for units. There are a variety of operations handbooks that give clarifications for common questions, but are (I think) only available to arrowmen (i.e. those who’ve completed their induction process) because some are password protected, if I recall correctly.
