Book is about 12 years out of date. Previous suggestion to use volunteers has been sent to committee. No feedback on current process in place.
No women pioneers in pioneer list. Last listed Mars mission 2012. Significant changes in new crewed vehicles. Sending a patch to the Moon on a commercial box to promote the merit badge has been suggested but might be perceived as pushy.
@williamCress are you talking about the printed Pamphlet? They rarely update those
Please direct suggestions for new merit badges, or updates to existing ones, to merit.badge@scouting.org.
I did that. So did the scientist at NASA who said to tell him if anything comes back. I used to chase parts at our air museum for the old officer in charge of the Apollo Saturn V contracted work. If we don’t have money, please use volunteers. BSA has done this before. If the merit badge website produced replies if would indicate someone was home and Scouting had SMEs left.
I agree. It’s about a dozen years out of date. I helped the editor years ago years ago find people to update it when it hadn’t been updated in living memory. The North Texas chapter of the National Space society included volunteers including a Mission Controller who was a trained astronaut. Since the lawsuits it’s been a black hole for lawsuits. They did it for Astronomy. If they don’t have the resources, tell us. After the astronaut who helped me died in the Challenger I sat in with the engineers who built it and won’t ever be gone. But I am not the person who should be on the revision. There is all of NASA and 19 volunteers in space organizations to draw on.
I have no idea if this will work, but it is how the system can work: contact your council advancement chair. They should know the Council Service Territory advancement chair. They should be able to get in contact with the national advancement committee. Let them know you have some awesome resources and that you understand these things take time, but that you would love to be involved with an update. I have no idea if this will work, but it is worth a try “going up the chain of command” through your council.
