Welcome! This forum has a treasure trove of great info – Scouters helping Scouters! Just a heads up, though - all content, information, and opinions shared on this forum are those of the author, not the BSA.
Did something change with the activity log recently? as for who’s able to create new events? Last month I created an event for our Winter Campout and now I am unable to create (no button) events.
After searching it looks like it may be a permission thing but my position asst cubmaster has not changed.
@Stephen_Hornak Yes Activity Logs. No errors there is just no add event button any longer. and I am no longer able to edit existing events.
@DonovanMcNeil that was my thought initially. Scoutbook doing scoutbook things.
Though going thru the update logs it seems on Jan 26th there was a change made.
An issue that caused the New Activity Log button to display for users that are not authorized to edit the Activity Log has been fixed. The New Activity Log button will only appear for those that have permission to create activity logs.
So perhaps we were all just operating outside of our permissions. looks like only Key 3 are allowed. or possibly those that have individually assigned activity log permissions.
Troop 624. I started the activity just under activity logs.
I’m confused by your statement that I shouldn’t have access although the entire access system is beyond confusing. We had to update permissions when our units were combined because that was done so poorly. So can you be more specific about what the access problem is?
Donovan can likely elaborate on your specific situation, but the permissions for access to functionality in SB+ were restructured as described in the blue banner at the top of the forums (which users can dismiss, so it might not be appearing for you). I’ve copied the text and links below.
A major focus of the migration to Scoutbook Plus is to have positions mirror the positions shown in My.Scouting to ensure positions were reflected accurately in both platforms. The main purpose it to honor the guidance of our charter organizations and the positions they approve. Therefore, Scoutbook Plus does not use Legacy Scoutbook positions. Registered positions are used to provide base permissions. Some additional permissions can be added by the unit, however, there are restrictions on what can be given. See the updated Scoutbook_Permissions.pdf and the Scoutbook Plus permissions video for more details.
If your roster is blank, select the roster filter then click Reset Filters.
If you are having trouble with a small number of Scouts or Leaders, the first question the SUAC will ask is what is the Scouting America Member ID. You can save time by providing this in your initial post. We do not need or want names, just the Member ID.
Take a look at the PDF linked in the quoted section, as it describes which permissions are defaulted on, which can be added, and which can not be added for each registered position and/or functional role. Pay close attention to the superscripts. They’re small and (for me at least) easy to mix up.

As ASM in the Unit you have no permissions. You were given Calendar permissions, but not Activity permissions.
I’m aware of the new permissions. My permissions were fixed so that I had access to everything after our troops were merged. At some point those permissions changed. They have been fixed again. I was able to create multiple camping activities by going through the calendar, but it was tedious to have to remove everyone that wasn’t there (even though attendance was recorded in the activity, that’s a whole other issue) so I went directly to the Activities page and that’s where I could create the activity but I couldn’t add anyone.
Donovan can only see what your permissions are now (i.e. when the checked the database), so he can’t tell which permissions you were previously allocated. You noted that those have been updated again, so it will take at least overnight (sometimes a full 24 hours depending on when the synch runs) for those to propagate out through the system.
You mentioned that you “had access to everything”. Were you able to edit activities via the activity logs page after the SB+ permissions replaced the classic SB permissions, or were you only accessing the activities via the calendar? I’m a little unclear on when you were first tried accessing via the activity logs (due to the tedious attendance editing issues you noted in the excerpted section below).
This is a complicated question. The SB/SB+ permissions changed prior to our merger. In my original unit T624G, I was SM. After the merger, we had multiple issues to fix and the person who worked on that confirmed they restored the permissions I had in my previous unit since I lost of them when I was transfer to the merged unit as an ASM. Apparently, those permission went away (based on what Donovan said). I hadn’t worked on any activities entry after the merger until today, but earlier today I was able to crate activities when going through the calendar but not directly through the activities. Does that make sense?
That’s exactly the information I was trying to sort out. As SM, you obviously had full access. As Donovan noted, ASMs by default have no permissions at all under the new structure. So, each set of permissions has to be added explicitly. Calendar Editor (including attached logs) are handled differently than direct access to the activity logs themselves (based on what I’ve seen in my own unit). Whether it’s the intended behavior that calendar editors without log editor permissions can add activities to the calendar events is a separate question I can’t answer.
My unit (like a lot of others) is still hashing out exactly who needs which sets of permissions to do their “troop jobs”. So, y’all aren’t alone in this mystery hike. :^)
