Welcome! This forum has a treasure trove of great info – Scouters helping Scouters! Just a heads up, though - all content, information, and opinions shared on this forum are those of the author, not the BSA.
One other item of note: all advancement at the cub scout program level should be tracked at Scoutbook+ (advancements.scouting), since the revised cub program was not implemented in the Classic Scoutbook platform.
That does seem like the most likely explanation, except I’ve never run into this issue for other ranks (Webelos and under). Is this just for AOL to troop level? I was told cub scouts advance regardless of adventure requirements (which I’m not a fan of personally, but that’s the rule for now).
For example, this response was from another thread:
“All ranks have a required amount of electives that are supposed to be completed to earn the rank patch. Basically, as long as the the kid is a member of the pack, it doesn’t matter what they actually complete. They will still be promoted with the rest of the den whether or not they complete the requirements/electives.”
We’re starting to wander a bit off of the technical side of things into policy, which we’re not supposed to do. It sounds like you might want to look up the Guide to Advancement from Scouting America’s website to get some more background, and possibly talk to folks in your unit or at roundtable, based on what you posted.
I think “advance” is being used in two different senses here, and that’s at least part of the underlying confusion. In one case, “advance” is being used in the sense of “rank advancement”, meaning having completed the requirements to earn a given rank. In the other case, it is being used in the sense of “moving from one grade-level den to the next”, which occurs when the scouts change grades, independent of whether or not they have completed the rank requirements for the prior den level.
So, if a scout moves-up in grade level, they move to the next den level (e.g. Bears to Webelos). It is not necessary to have earned the prior rank in order to do so. Separately, cub scouts earn the rank for their den level based on the work they did while in that den level.
Thank you Charley, that explains it perfectly and answers so many questions I had about cub scouts! Appreciate everyone for getting us to the answer I was looking for. Impressed with how quick you all are.
