Any software engineers using Azure to try to build a new Scoutbook report?

I know that it has been said that there is no plan any time soon to make a Scoutbook API available for building custom reports.

I just started using Azure with my job for mostly Extract-Transform-Load operations. I wonder if it would be possible to get a CSV report from Scoutbook, use that as input, and then transform the data into something with more customizable options. I have seen some tech people who were interested in the API who offered their services to help out. This could be a good alternative.

@ChristianHiggins in the meantime, have you explored the already provided custom report modules in the form of Report Builder and Roster Builder? Both of these allow greater flexibility on reporting on a wide number of data points from within Scoutbook. This is in addition to the “stock” reports that provide useful info for most everyday/weekly unit tasks.

What I would like would be a more visually pleasing report that I can copy and paste in an e-mail to my Cub Scout den families, especially with regard to formatting. So what I’m currently doing now is running my custom report (get all the kids in my den with the belt loops that we’ve covered so far and their sub-requirements), exporting as CSV, then formatting the headers for the names of the belt loops and the kids’ names, highlight in green for completed belt loops and sub-requirements, in yellow for partially completed, in grey for no longer necessary, etc. I also have to go back and re-fill descriptions for many of the sub-requirements because they currently come out as incomplete, misspelled, or otherwise unhelpful.

I also like to give them occasional progress reports to show where they can do one or two easy requirements to finish off a belt loop, but going through and making a report for each of the thirteen Scouts in our den is time-consuming.

Here’s an example of the descriptions from Code of the Wolf:

@ChristianHiggins - if i recall correctly that already exists in report builder

@ChristianHiggins I understand the intent better and don’t know if such a change will be made at this time. As an aside, that is the exact purpose of the “red” Scouting app available in the Apple and Google store (for free). For parents to be able to login and see the completed requirements and what still needs to be completed (and then mark completions from work at home so it automatically flows into SB without having to email you to take another step to enter it in as complete - bonus). With minimal training for parents, it’s a very nice graphical presentation for a parent of the scout’s progress (and intent of the app).

Oh wow, just got the red Scouting app, and this is a much, much better experience for the families. I will recommend this. Thank you!

@ChristianHiggins - what be better than giving the parents and scout the ability to see things for themselves. Even using scoutbook.scouting.org is a big help.

@Stephen_Hornak Scoutbook is not a good user experience for people who login only once in a while.

@ChristianHiggins - i understand that… but getting the parents to use the scouting app would be a huge win.

@ChristianHiggins you’re welcome. Oftentimes, this app gets overlooked because it “isn’t for leaders.” Hope this helps your parents.
