Camping Metrics

Received this from a unit commissioner - assistance requested. Any assistance is appreciated!

“I have a question about Scoutbook synchronizing with Commissioner Tools in My.Scouting. We would like to recognize the units in REDACTED District that have at least 4 of the 5 metrics completed in Commissioner Tools. There are currently only 2 troops who have the metric for long-term camping. I know that almost every troop should have attended summer camp this year and should have that metric. Is that metric applied only to those troops that recorded summer camp in Scoutbook Plus? I spoke with LEADER last night about this. His troop attended HMSR but they do not track camping in Scoutbook and therefore do not have the metric. Troop REDACTED did record summer camp, per LEADER, in Scoutbook but they do NOT have the metric. Is there an issue with Scoutbook syncing with My.Scouting? Do most troops not record camping & hiking in Scoutbook? I’m trying to not embarrass anyone (especially our council & district) when handing out recognitions next month.”

@ColeMitchell

I do not believe any camping data flows from Scoutbook to my.scouting.org. The units or their commissioners would need to update my.scouting.org themselves.

@ColeMitchell units can mark things as meeting that metric in SB with a simple action.

Under Edit Calendar Event - on Right Side

Thank you @edavignon and @DonovanMcNeil. To clarify, Scoutbook and my.Scouting do not talk to each other? If the metrics showing up in Commissioner Tools are only affected by date in my.Scouting, is there any reason to have units log it in Scoutbook or should we just direct them to enter it through my.Scouting?

Similar to this, we report service hours to our Board using data from my.Scouting’s Registrar Tools reports. If the systems don’t talk, are we potentially missing out on some data there as well? (i.e. Unit A fills out Scoutbook only, Unit B fills out my.Scouting only and since the systems don’t talk, we don’t get accurate reporting).

EDIT TO ADD: “affected by date” should read “affected by data

@ColeMitchell- units should log camping, service and hikes in scoutbook logs for reporting and oa, rank and merit badge data. The only thing as far as camping input from the unit side in my.scouting.org is a super activity

@Stephen_Hornak thank you - to be clear, what they log in Scoutbook should reflect on reports in my.Scouting?

@ColeMitchell there is nothing to report to Commish - other than the Defined Metrics. Commish Metrics only care about one (for Troops) extended campout - as I showed - if a unit marks this one thing in SB+ Calendar it will show on Commish report

@DonovanMcNeil understood, thanks. I had a second clarification that might’ve gotten buried regarding reports in my.Scouting - do the systems talk well enough that service hours reported in SB will show up in my.Scouting?

Or is that the only way they can report them? Which means by default, they show up.

The Camping Metric is all that commish corp wanted to come through that I have heard of

@ColeMitchell - this is what I see on our unit dashboard

This seems to match the activities entered in the scoutbook plus calendar and logs

@Stephen_Hornak thanks - does anything indicate if it counts for the “long term camp”? That’s the main issue I’m trying to figure out

@ColeMitchell- interesting as that was NOT mentioned in any of your posts. We did not attend summer camp last year and had no super activity.

@Stephen_Hornak thanks for your help - it was buried in the very first post and not 100% clear. To clarify I am council staff so I don’t have the ability to “play around” in the system to answer these myself. How does someone mark a long term camp using that screen?

@ColeMitchell- one of the key 3 would need to log into my.scouting.org then go the organization manager, then Unit Data Metric Entry on the left, click on that and the screen i posted is what shows up.
I am hopeful that we will be at summer camp in 2026 so I will see if that entry from the logs alone changes that camping data or if i need to enter it in the metric screen

@Stephen_Hornak - understood, thank you for the help. So from that screen, they are able to mark if it was a long term camp? Or is that something that is marked within Scoutbook Plus?

@ColeMitchell- well that is what the text says… and it would be the completed date (or the end date)

@ColeMitchell what Stephen shows is correct. Units entering date into the metric updates the metric for My.Scouting. This can be performed in My.Scouting or on an individual event within Scoutbook+. Only a unit K3 can perform this action in both systems. Entering the date is the acknowledgement of a long term camp.

Commish Corp allows you to mark anything as that basically - it is how they wanted it programmed
