Firefox browser not fully supported by my.scouting

Firefox is a viable and popular browser and has been for years. Unit Contact will not complete when the Finish button is pressed. The contact is not being saved. The Profile picture is not displaying after application shutdown and restart. Issues with some courses in Scouting U have been observed. This is not a new issue and has been observed since the major changes started around year ago.

Have you verified that the same issues occur in a private browsing/incognito window? I routinely use Firefox at training.scouting and only occasionally have I run into issues, typically related to a plugin.

The supported browsers are Chrome, Edge, and Safari.

Charley - thank you. I do not use extensions for that reason. This is a standard Firefox installation. I know some of the issues come from Mozilla coding as there is no reason for a Google login prompt to be displayed (and no way to turn it off) every time I open my.scouting.

Ronald - why the browser restrictions? The only reason I know of is that the coders are using browser specific code rather than sticking to browser neutral coding. Granted, it provides a little performance improvement but it also tends to leave a lot of files on the system (performance killers on the local system) when the browsers shut down. Edge doesn’t even take itself out of memory once it is closed! Google and MS have a history of scraping systems for all kinds of data and I believe in protecting what little privacy is left to us.

Unfortunately, Firefox does not comply with modern browsing standards. This has been the standard since My.Scouting was launched in 2015. (Edge obviously added later after it had been tested and vetted.)

The same problem exists when I use Chrome. There are a few reasons this might happen. A setting on my system (unchanged since BEFORE the upgrades) might no longer be compatible with my.scouting requirements. The application upgrade might contain what we euphemistically referred to as “undocumented features”, a change that no one intended that could impact some users. Do you know of any changes that might fit into this category? I run a W10 OS that is kept up to date as are the browser installations. The logic suggests it might be due to a change in the application that is entirely unintentional, perhaps for security reasons.

Unit Contacts were replaced by Unit Connections a couple of weeks back. There is a banner informing you of that change when you first log into my.scouting.org.

I have always found that if you are magnifying the size of text in your browser (I even use 125% and I’m 67) you need to put that back to 100% when you do training, and make sure you allow “pop-ups” on *.scouting.org

If you have not watched any of the new training videos on the Unit Connections process, and your Council or district have not scheduled any trainings, then there are videos available here:

They were released on 2/25.

Thanks for replying. I am well versed in IT and retired as a Data Analyst last year. I have in excess of 40 years in and around IT starting as a software engineer and systems analyst. I can pretty much smell an application error having generated a few and being hit by many over the years. I concede there may have been application changes that were not passed down which could require some local setting changes, Typically, not the same problem with 2 vastly different browser though. I use as-delivered Firefox and Chrome (only when forced to do so) to avoid any issues with extensions. While I am a bit older and admit my vision could be better, I do not normally change the screen zoom and prefer to leave it at 100%. I have heard from another UC here that she is having the same issue using Chrome.

I don’t know if this is your issue, but what was seen in the past wasn’t browser view calling by OS level scaling. Windows and web apps don’t always handle this perfectly. Most do. But this is where screens are very high resolution for their size (nearly 4K on a 15 or 17” laptop for example). The OS then scales everything by 150 or 200 so that it doesn’t look super tiny, but it looks crisp.

Again, maybe not this situation, but something to check out.

I tend to use a 23" using 1080P rather than the 14" laptop. One of challenges of getting older. I have attempted this using both screens with no success. The National Commissioner Technology Center reports not seeing the issue but they are having the developer look into it. I have reports from 4 other Commissioners in this Council/District with the same issue, not likely it is a single laptop issue. I have asked for info on the others systems but not received a reply.

National called a few minutes ago. The answer is simply that a mandatory field is not declared as MANDATORY. Selecting one of the “Other” sub-categories resolves the conflict and the Connections finished without any issues. As to why it gets lost and does not flag some sort of a data entry issue, I’ll let them try to work that one out. I am told there will be a minor change in the near future to add text requiring a sub-cateogy be selected. Thanks for all the comments and interest!
