Trained Leader Report broken for Merit Badge Counselors

I am the Training Chair for my district.

I read this morning that the trained leader reports in my.scouting have been updated recently to reflect that Hazardous Weather training must have been taken in the last two years to have the report show the leader as “trained”. I ran the district level report and saw the changes.

Merit Badge counselors should not have been affected by this change as Hazardous Weather is not required for that position. However a good portion (2/3) of the trained Merit Badge counselors in my district have been errantly flipped to untrained as well. I don’t see a pattern as to why some are affected and others are not.

Is this issue known and being addressed?

@TimothyGiorgi

This needs to be reported via your Council professional staff. Please contact your Council and ask them to open a ticket with National Member Care.

@TimothyGiorgi , I’d bet you those MBC’s are also registered as Direct Contact Leaders.

Looks like National finally toggled on the currency requirement for SCO_800, as a lot folks are now showing as Not Trained.

Check it out and let us know, please.

To add to Timothy’s post, we’re also seeing this discrepancy in our Council. It seems as if there’s a switch, toggle, or some programming code that is marking Merit Badge Counselors as Direct Contact, hence they’re showing up as untrained. Is this something that I need to report to my Council to go through our professional staff to run up the chain?

While researching what’s going on, I’ve been looking for a printed list of all direct-contact positions. Is there a place on scouting.org that has this list?

I sent this info to my council and they confirmed it was due to the people also being direct contact leaders but am not sure they are pushing up the issue. In my view this is a mistake and if done intentionally then … well I wont go there.
@ChristyCochran To see Direct Contact Leaders, pull up a Trained Leader report and download it to a spreadsheet. You can then filter on the “direct leader” column.

This document is a bit dated, but it does show direct contact leaders:

Position trained requirements are also available at the following link:

@JenniferOlinger Thanks for the link to the doc with the list. I was hoping there was something more current or listed like they have for training codes and position specific training list. (It’d be great if on the position-specific training list they’d include whether that position is direct-content or not.)

@TimothyGiorgi Hrm. I hadn’t thought about a second position needing HW effecting their MBC position. Again, seems like a coding error. Thanks for the tip on getting their list of positions that are Direct Contact or not.

@ChristyCochran - you dont know who a direct contact leader is ? My recollection is that committee members, COR, and XO would NOT be direct contact. Scoutmaster, ASM, Den leaders, Cubmaster and so on would be direct contact leaders.

@Stephen_Hornak I know who the main direct-contacts are, but when it comes to Merit Badge Counselors and the issue we’re having right now with them being affected by the Haz Weather issue, I’m second guessing where they specifically fall. They aren’t d-c, but they’re being treated as such so I wanted to confirm exactly where they fall and if National had changed things up and I missed it.

@ChristyCochran - well there is nobody from national on the forums to answer that question. No point n continuing to ask here.

To “ask” National this, an employee of your council will have to enter a member care ticket.

And the professionals wonder why the organization continues to struggle… smh

I agree. I often say they will sit around rentable and wonder why people didn’t train and why people didn’t re-up. When, really, they don’t have to wonder.
