If my Scout attends a Council level event such as NYLT or Summer Camp (as a provisional Scout) and no unit adults are present at the camp, then ScoutBook Plus does not give the Scout credit for the camping nights. There should be an option to check, such as “Council event” so that credit is given without local unit leaders attending.
@ErikHix- what do you mean by its not giving him credit
Any leader, the Scout or parent can create Activity Log entries for the Scout. There is no “automatic” credit for attending an event.
Camping nights and hiking miles only get counted for Scouts when 2 registered leaders are marked as attending the event. I verified this by watching as Scouts totals only were updated after I attached 2 leadersnas having attended the event. In my case, an NYLT course, there were plenty of registered adults in attendance but none from our unit. So we had to pick 2 at random.
Only get counter where? Did a leader approve the event?
@ErikHix - I know for a fact that scouts can enter activity logs for things that do not include unit leaders and have seen them approved and count on the respective tallies. Is this some rule in your unit ?
The event was entered by a Key 3 leader. Camping nights did not appear in Scouts’ totals until adult leaders from the unit were added to the event.
@ErikHix - I just checked my son’s log and NYLT is there and nobody from the unit was present and the nights count. If self reported then it has to be approved by the unit leadership
@Stephen_Hornak is right here - Scouts can enter stuff themself with no leaders - once they are approved by unit they show up. This is for logs, not calendar events, that is different
I’m talking about activity logs attached to calendar events.
@ErikHix - well why would NYLT end up as a calendar event as those are unit based and as such require 2 leaders. If a scout attends NYLT or does a hike on their own why enter it on the unit calendar ???
Well only a unit could attach something to a calendar event I think - MAYBE a scout could but would still need to be approved - would have to test that.
@DonovanMcNeil - I just tested with my son’s login and it gets the your position/permissions do not allow this action on any attempt to use the calendar
Yeah - only unit admins can add Activity Logs to a Unit Calendar Event - would need to see screenshots or do a screenshare to understand what you are seeing
Scout can enter things and it says Completed - BUT it will not show till leader approved cause it is on the Scouts personal Log
Unit can approve in Log or in Roster > Advancement > To Approve
I can see some use cases for having a unit calendar event that scouts participate in that isn’t actually a unit event.
Consider an OA event. Unit wants to know it’s occurring so they are aware of the potential conflict. OA Unit Rep & Adviser want to be able to identify which arrowmen in the unit are planning to attend, and should get camping/service credits. The OA chapter/lodge has no way to record those nights/hours in the SB+ logs. Individual arrowmen could log the event in the app (assuming they have a device on which to do so), but not every youth has access to such even if they have a relevant device. In addition, there have been enough issues in the past with individuals double-logging unit events that it seems like encouraging scouts to track some (but not all!) activities in the app would rapidly get confusing. However, a scouter facilitating the logging (e.g. the OA Unit Rep Adviser) could log those events for participation.
In addition, what about scouts who don’t have access to a device at all? Shouldn’t there also be a pathway for them to log activities done outside the unit that would count towards advancement or awards? It seems remarkably short-sighted to omit the ability for unit scouters to accommodate scouting families who don’t have ready access to a computer/device.
I’m a Scoutmaster. I have permission.
This is on a troop calendar event. Activity logs attached to the calendar event only get included in attendees totals once adult leaders are marked as attending.
I want to be able to record my Scouts’ attendance in one calendar event, not in individual activity logs entered by each Scout.
@ErikHix - I just added a test NYLT event to the unit calendar. I then added camping night for 3 scouts as having attended and they show up in their logs and NO unit leaders were included. I think this is a process issue and not a bug as it worked for me without issue.. 1. - create the event but do not select attendees of any kind. 2. once past the last date, edit the event and select the type of activity.. in this case camping. 3. add the scouts and save.
This will work for any placeholder event, like an NYLT, OA, ourside of unit event
We don’t encourage Scouts to track their own activity logs, for exactly that reason (not all Scouts have equal access to devices, and activities are not reliably tracked that way). The risk of double-logging is averted by the approval requirement for Scout-entered activities. If the Troop leaders already entered it, reject the Scout entered duplicate.
