Can't Find/Connect MBC

My son went to a merit badge fair and took a class. Afterward, we were able to find and connect the MBC to him via Scoutbook, and the MBC was able to approve many of the requirements.

That was many months ago. Recently, went in to record an update and saw that an MBC was no longer assigned to the merit badge.

Naturally, tried to add the counselor back, but no matter what combination of information is entered, all I get is “No record found that satifies the search criteria.”

Search Criteria is as follows:
Include MBC Only – Check
Name – First Last

  • either Member ID or email address (both of which the MBC provided).

Any ideas? Is it possible to find out why the MBC got disconnected? And why the search is failing? The MBC is local but associated with a different troop.

There are a lot of things that can cause a failure and disconnection. For example, if the scouter’s registration as an MBC was dropped for some reason, they won’t appear in the search. Similarly, if they are no longer approved to counsel the particular badge (either intentionally or in error), they won’t appear when you search for that particular badge, and would have dropped off the connection.

The MBC themselves should be able to sort out whether they are still showing as approved to counsel the badge in question (and reach out to their council for correction if they aren’t but should be).

If you post the Scouting America Member ID (no names please!) for the MBC and the badge in question, the SUAC volunteers may be able to look into the back end to see if there’s something going on.

The member ID provided is 126462325
and the MB is Personal Fitness.

@Yaung-MoonCho This MBC did have some duplicate accounts issues. Those issues should be fixed now.

I am able to find the MBC using the following search criteria from the [Scout]'s Connections page in Scoutbook (legacy):

  • Firstname Lastname
  • Email
  • City
  • State
  • checked box next to “Search from al the Councils”

Maybe the information I have isn’t accurate? But that doesn’t explain how I was able to find and connect to the same MBC to my kid’s account last year…

@Yaung-MoonCho MBCs can also connect to scouts themself - they can go to Legacy Scoutbook > My Profile > My Connections > click ADD at top > enter scout info

Thanks! I’ll save that approach as a last resort. Don’t particularly want to put extra burden on the MBC at the moment.

I am having the same issue. I can see the MBC in the list with his details, but cannot find him when adding a connection to a Scout.

The MBC in question:
Member ID: 4281074
MB: Swimming

I have tried every combination possible and it still says not found. I am a council admin and can see the details of the MBC, so I don’t think I using any incorrect information.

At the risk of asking a dumb question, is the MBC already connected to the scout in question (e.g. as a unit scouter, or for another MB)? I believe they don’t appear in search if they’re already connected.

Not a dumb question. In the case of my Scout, they are not. They do not have any MBCs connected to them yet, just parents and unit leaders.

Nope. No current connection between the scout and the MBC in question. As stated in the original post, there used to be an active connection between the two–for the same merit badge in question. Don’t know what caused the disconnection. Still unable to add the MBC back to the same unfinished merit badge. I might have to ask the MBC try to connect on their side.

Interesting…I was able to get this to work, but it’s odd.

Searching on the exact same criteria, but if I UN-CHECK the “Include MBC Only” checkbox, the MBC in question is found. Having that checked causes it to not be found.

Success!

Was able to locate and send the invite to the MBC in question.

Had to go about it from a different angle, though.

All prior attempts to establish the connection was initiated from the specific merit badge screen.

This time, instead of going into the details page for the specific merit badge, went into my scout’s “Connections” page. Then clicked on “+Add” which brought up the familiar “New Connection” screen.

Checked “Include MBC Only”, typed in Name (First Last) and and Member ID.
