Can't get into Scoutbook

@GarnetMorris

BSA IT is working to resolve the issue with getting Scoutbook working without clearing cookies. This is apparently a cookie issue, not a cache issue. We will post a notice when the issue is fixed.

I would like to echo @GarnetMorris statement. Why is there no active notification going out about changes, especially, one where there is potential breaking changes or regressions? I too am a software engineer and if my company rolled out changes like BSA, we would not be a top software company. Please PLEASE start actively communicating to the Key 3 in every unit about upcoming changes and things to be aware of. Just like others stated, people use Scoutbook when they need to. They are not using it on a daily basis. Please start treating adult volunteers as that, volunteers. The more aggrevasion you put on the volunteers, the more likely they will no longer be willing to help.

@edavignon is there a release schedule for Scoutbook that includes what is coming up in each release? Having that as an RSS feed would allow others to consume and be notified of what changes are coming and when.

@JoshWells

Scoutbook updates are typically on Wednesday at 9:00 PM central. Due to Thanksgiving, this week’s update was moved to last night.

The BSA does not publish a list of future changes. Changes are announced after the push is complete. I will be posting last night’s change log soon as it needs to be modified with information about the ongoing issues. I’m a volunteer so I have to squeeze this in as time with the paying job permits.

So far, I’ve had no problems connecting from an Incognito window in Chrome on mobile. It does try to connect to IA from a “regular” window without clearing cache. At the risk of invoking disaster, migrating coulda been a lot worse. :‑X

Michael,
Send me an email with the details of your scouts’ issue. Send it to SUACInformation@gmail.com or bill.nelson@scouting.org

Josh,
We will be more diligent in posting major upcoming changes in BSA Announcements category. You probably should monitor that category.

I’m using the Scoutbook app. I just now tried itand it still won’t let me log in. Should I re-install the app?

Mark,

This is not an app, this is the Scoutbook web site using a web browser on your phone. You may have saved the site to your home screen so it appears as an icon.

BSA IT is currently working to fix a cache and cookie issue. To use scoutbook before the fix is in place, you will need to clear your browser cache and the scoutbook.scouting.org cookies.

Hi All,

I have the same issue, everything was fine last night and now I can’t log in.

I have SMC to do this evening, we’ve had major issues and continue to for our troop 2060 where the scouts can’t do their rank requirements updates for over 2 weeks now.

Echoing what @JoshWells said, it doesn’t seem like there is thorough testing done to ensure everything thing is working prior to going live…

Scoutbook is good only when it works unfortunately.

@NavaidKhan

I suggest using an Incognito or Private window to access Scoutbook while the BSA works to fix the cache and cookie issue.

We did extensive testing but apparently there is something different between the test and production environments that prevented the issues from being found.

Then you! That worked. I forgot that it wasn’t an app. Is there one? I couldn’t find any that has the same info as the web site

Hey @edavignon, I sincerely appreciate the work you do as a volunteer and please know that any comments I have are geared towards helping the broader community and is not a direct reflection of anyone’s actual efforts.

BSA really needs to redefine its Service Release planning and notification process. Any development organization KNOWS what they are going to be releasing and when. For instance, the product I work with we release bug fixes every weekend but this is ONLY bug fixes. Then, we plan major feature rollouts twice a year. Those major feature rollouts are planned 6 months in advance and notification of what is going to be included will be released 5 months in advance of the release. In every case, we communicate, directly to the customer.

I understand that BSA is not a professional software company. However, if it has a software development team, they should be following proper software development practices. Asking for a bunch of volunteers to monitor a forum thread is not enough communication. Also, posting a notice AFTER the release is not helpful. These are all reactive measures. You really need to think proactively. How do we limit the impact to our user base? What telemetry are we looking at in case we see a spike in errors? I know your service is getting spammed with bad requests because I still can’t successfully log in and it’s throwing a service error each time.

I’m not sure why BSA purchased Scoutbook. They have continued to remove and separate the useful functionality and continue to move into a more antiquated software platform, at least it’s my perception when I have to do advancement or service logs.

Using Firefox - I can confirm that clearing the Scouting related cookies and Cache returned the functionality. Unfortunately the automatic redirects are not working properly without doing that. I was able to selectively clear cookies and cache (rather than blanket clearing.)

@JoshWells - There has been a banner on Scoutbook.com for the past couple of weeks about the upcoming domain name change. I share some of your frustration with regards to the lack of clear roadmap and apparent divergence between the 2 platforms.

The shift of support from National to the Volunteer groups on this forum and the local councils has left volunteers in often difficult situations and managing technology instead of advancing the ideals of the program.

@edavignon & other SUAC folks - I really appreciate that you are in an extremely difficult situation, and thank you for everything you do.

@RalphSiccama - are you going to scoutbook.scouting.org ?

@RalphSiccama Scoutbook and Internet Advancement were recently moved to a new domain. The new urls are:

Scoutbook:
http://scoutbook.scouting.org/

Internet Advancement 2.0:
http://advancements.scouting.org/

If you are having trouble accessing, please open in a private / incognito window or clear browser cache and cookies.

having the same issue. I thought I was going crazy. Funny enough I can login using my phone google chrome, but not the google chrome browser on my computer.

Updated: Followed [JenniferOlinger] advice and cleared my chrome cache. Now I can login on my computer.

For some reason I cant ever get MS Edge to use the new URL unless I use their In private browsing. (even with deleting Edge history and cookies).

Interesting enough the Internet Advancement login shows me has a Scoutbook advertisement on the left pointing to the old SB dot Com address.

Don’t know if its possible for BSA IT to add some type of banner on the Internet Advancement page about the Scoutbook URL changes.

Can work around this for now just but have separate account usage on this home computer. So one uses Chrome and another users Edge just for ease of use and separation.

Clearing cache isn’t working for me. I’m getting redirected to internet advancement. I can get in, but I have no idea how to update advancement for kids, and I can’t seem to access regular Scoutbook.
