Forbidden: Access is denied

Is anyone else getting “403 - Forbidden: Access is denied.” when trying to log into Scoutbook?

@RickHillenbrand- working for me. I would clear cache for scouting.org

Thanks - It is working for me in a different browser. Rather unusual for Chrome to behave this way.

Seems to be a unique Chrome thing, even after clearing cache. Works in Firefox and MS Edge. Anyone else having Chrome issues?

@RickHillenbrand - and working just fine for me in chrome.

I’m getting 403 errors in some browsers on some devices, but it’s working on the same browser on other devices. No discernable pattern. Very bizarre, and new behavior. So far my testing shows:

Edge for PC (standard mode): 403 on PC “A”, but works on laptop “B”
Edge for PC (private mode): works on both “A” and “B”
Chrome for PC (incognito): 403 on PC “A”, but works on laptop “B”
Chrome for PC (standard mode): works on both “A” and “B”
Chrome for Android (standard): works on one Android device “C”, but 403 on Android device “D”
Chrome for Android (incognito): works on one Android device “C”, (not tested on “D”)
Firefox for Android: 403 on Android “C”, (not tested on “D”)

@GwendyDarling- I do not think it is a scoutbook/scoutbook plus issue. More likely cookies/cache issue with the browsers. Beyond that there are few reasons to be in legacy scoutbook

The only reason we need access is because the new e-mail system still isn’t working for us - sent messages to the bulk of the members of our unit disappear into the void. Messages sent to smaller groups get kicked back with errors that say our adults leaders are youth and can’t be messaged without their parents, lol. It’s been this way since the new messaging system was first rolled out. We were advised to keep using the old system until the new one is working properly.

Also, I don’t believe there is a way to clear cookies/cache in a (brand new) Chrome incognito window, which is one of the reasons I suspected something more is going on.

@GwendyDarling- ok…what do you think is going on. I have had no issues on my phone, tablet, work pc and home pc.. do explain.

No clue, but I’m hoping the developers might.

What type of device were you having problems with Chrome in?

My first-pass check would be to see if there are any extensions/add-on/plugins running in the browser/device combinations that are throwing errors.

When I had 403 errors previously, I eventually got around them by manually clearing all saved data for *.scouting.org on my browser. The process to do so varies by browser, do it’s likely easiest to dig up the ones germane to your preferred browser(s) via a 'net search.

On Firefox on Android device “D”, there were no extensions. On the Chome incognito window on PC “A”, no extensions are even possible. On another device a third parent recently reported to me, iPhone “E”, using the DuckDuckGo browser, no extensions are possible. And that person gets 403 errors for both scoutbook.scouting.org AND advancements.scouting.org.

Is it possible this is due to a recent (within the last few weeks) change to WAF rules or bot-detection heuristics which are flagging certain browser request fingerprints? And more importantly, if clearing browsing data doesn’t work for someone, are they just “stuck” until the WAF rules get updated again?

@GwendyDarling- here are my test results:
android tablet - chrome, firefox, duck duck go - no issues
android phone - same browsers - no issues
win11 enterprise - firefox and chrome - no issues
mac studio tahoe - same browsers - no issues
macbook pro - same browsers - no issues

this is pointing to device specific issues with cookies and cache being stales

So, add to the mystery the following information: Yesterday, my CHROME browser would not go to ScoutBook even after clearing cache. I left my machine on overnight… Today, voila, CHROME gets to ScoutBook no problems.

I’m beginning to think that there may have been some rolling silent updates to browsers? (The famous Windows trick.)

I, too, am having the same issues as @GwendyDarling. Multiple different combinations of computers, internet browsers, cleared cookies and caches, public and private browsing: no way to enter anything without getting 403 errors.

@ChristopherMunson- clear all for scouting.org cache and cookies.

No luck unfortunately x 2 browsers. I’m also unable to select any of my scouts: the names are dark grey and the box to the left of the name is disabled. FYI, I’m registered as assistant cub master.

@ChristopherMunson- an assistant cubmaster has no inherited rights in scoutbook plus. Your key 3 would need to assign you permissions.
