How does an admin in Scoutbook not have any permissions to change calendar, or activities or advancement in the new Scoutbook plus? Why would the permissions not carry over to the new system? Scoutmaster has made me admin and I still do not have permissions.
See the post at the top of the forums.
Scoutmaster has made me admin and I still don”t have ability to enter anything.
@StephenLangridge- how did they make you an admin
From the post at the top of the forums:
Scoutbook Plus does not use Legacy Scoutbook positions .
See Scoutbook_Permissions.pdf and the Scoutbook Plus permissions video for more details.
He said he made me admin in the permissions. I was not next to him when he did it. I am admin in scoutbook. Have acces to all youth and adults but can’t do anything in Scoutbook plus. Makes zero sense.
The word admin does not appear in the Permissions Manager. Being an admin in Scoutbook does not mean anything in Scoutbook plus.
Why would you not use all permissions from Scoutbook in Scoutbook Plus? This makes zero sense. How do I get Scoutbook to get me the permissions I had before without having to watch a 21 minute video and trying to get a key 3 to do it as well?
I had ability in Scoutbook as Admin to do anything in Scoutbook. I am the advancement chair and cannot enter anything for the youth. Why would Scoutbook plus take away all permissions that were in Scoutbook? This makes no sense at all.
It use to mean something, why does it not now?
The Guide to Advancement give the Unit Leader (Scoutmaster in your case) the FULL authority to decide WHO can approve advancement. Being Advancement Chair DOES NOT give you the authority to approve advancement. Being an ASM does not give you the authority to approve advancement.
That being said, the Scoutmaster MAY allow you, as an ASM to test and approve advancement for Scouts. The Scoutmaster MAY all you as Advancement Chair to RECORD those approvals.
Because this is in control of the Scoutmaster, being an ASM or UAC does not automatically give you the permission to record approvals in Scoutbook Plus.
Per the document I linked previously, a Key 3 may add Advancement Approval to your list of permissions.
Scoutbook had only 1 option for giving permission and that was Edit Advancement which allowed any leader with it to both record completions and approvals. Scoutbook Plus breaks this into 3 separate permissions, Completion, Approval and Award. This is why being an Admin in legacy Scoutbook does not translate into the same permissions in Scoutbook Plus.
The blue banner clearly explains the rationale behind the change:
A major focus of the migration to Scoutbook Plus is to have positions mirror the positions shown in My.Scouting to ensure positions were reflected accurately in both platforms. The main purpose it to honor the guidance of our charter organizations and the positions they approve. Therefore, Scoutbook Plus does not use Legacy Scoutbook positions. Registered positions are used to provide base permissions. Some additional permissions can be added by the unit, however, there are restrictions on what can be given.
Permissions couldn’t simply be migrated across because the granularity of the permissions structure changed and because of that last clause in the explanation: “…there are some restrictions on what [permissions] can be given.”
I totally get your frustration!
The rollout was quite abrupt and many people did not know it was coming or update things right away. If your Key 3 is taking awhile to watch the video & make the changes, perhaps you can help them. I am also a former key Admin in both troops and the SM for one troop gave me many keys to the kingdom in SB+ and the other troop has not.
This still doesn’t explain why SCoutbook Plus didn’t grandfather in permissions from Scoutbook. Why would an all inclusive data tracking system not do that. If you had permissions 1 day then there is an update to internet advancement which is now called Scoutbook plus lose all permissions. This is dumb and poor programming.
Had all abilities to do all in Scoutbook and internet advancement since I was the reason we use Scoutbook. Had the abilities 1 day then when Internet advancement became Scoutbook Plus lost all abilities in the advancement system, including calendar. Makes no senss why a program would not take all permissions from previous system to the new. This is dumb and huge waste of everyone’s time. This is poor programming. Why would you make more work for the volunteers who make this program work. Ridiculous. My council even tried to update the permissions in the system and it didn’t work.
@StephenLangridge- in reality the bad programming was classic scoutbook as it relied on the connection structure and admins and leaders could be added without regard for true registration
I explained this earlier but I will try again. It is the SCOUTMASTER that decides who can do what with advancement per the Guide to Advancement. Legacy Scoutbook did not provide the granularity to allow the Scoutmaster to do this. The Scoutbook Plus permission system provides the necessary granularity. Because Scouting America does not know what EVERY Scoutmaster in the organization may want for their unit, the permissions come in at the lowest level needed for any given registered position. This allows units to customize permissions for their use. This was a long time complaint with legacy Scoutbook that has finally been fixed.
I understood what you said earlier. I bet the KEY 3 around the country are super happy about this and the extra work the update made for them, Thanks for your explanation and responses.
@StephenLangridge- as a key 3 of two units I welcome this change as it is something I have been looking forward to. The effort and time was minimal for setting permissions. I have waited over a decade for this change.
The scoutmaster has me as a troop admins, and I was able to enter anything into scoutbook, but now I’m having similar issues to what others are saying. I can enter an activity, but it will not allow me to enter who participated. I understand that things have changed. I have explained this to the scoutmaster. He says that I have access to everything because I’m listed as a troop admins. So, what exactly does he need to do in scoutbook to give me back the permissions that I used to have??
