Membership end date changes when tranferring to a unit with a different charter end date

I know you all cannot do anything about this, and I have asked our council to put in a ticket to member care already, but I wanted to post here so others can be aware that this might be happening in their area.

Our council has been on a calendar year (Jan 1 - Dec 31) charter, but now under this new system we have units forming during at different times during the year, so they have different charter periods. When scouts/scouters transfer to these units, it is changing their membership end date to the end date of the unit. In some cases, that cuts months off their membership, and in others it is extending their membership.

We first saw this with a new pack that formed Oct 2023 with a charter end of 9/30/2024. Several scouts from neighboring packs with charter end date and membership end dates of 12/31/2024 transferred into this pack in the spring and had their membership end date changed to 9/30/2024 (same date as the charter end of the pack they joined). They have now dropped off the pack roster while we wait for our council and member care/IT to get this sorted out. They all had 3 months cut off their 12 month membership.

In the latest case, we had a new pack form in August 2024, with a charter end date of 7/31/2025. Scouts from a neighboring pack with a charter end and membership end date on 12/31/2024 had their membership end date change to the charter end date of 7/31/2025, giving them a free 7 month membership extension.

Update from national. They are not fixing this, instead kicking the can. Beyond disgusting.

“If they were not Yearly Members, then they would have adopted the units expiry date. There won’t be anything we can do as they all fit that. Once they renew, they should become yearly members and will then be on a 12 month term. We can try updating the term but some of them have already renewed for the 12 months.”

Sounds to me like a misunderstand somewhere. I’d try again.

Its been explained to them several times. This is a mess that they need to fix. They already angered every member with this new system and now they aren’t even giving everyone the 12 month membership due to glitches in the system.
