Welcome! This forum has a treasure trove of great info – Scouters helping Scouters! Just a heads up, though - all content, information, and opinions shared on this forum are those of the author, not the BSA.
@GwendyDarling - it would be nice.. but the cost and time involved would be tough. I know our exchange and dot.net email storage is capped and purged on a regular basis and there are attachment limits. I am also unsure if mail to external to the unit would be on the scope of work. That also become a maintenance issue as commissioner staff changes along with professional staff.
I love that messages can now be sent from the app it’s great to target messages on the some criteria we can target events. However, email is nearly useless. I can’t get parents to check it. We have also tried using a chat app (Slack) but the defaults are no notifications and people struggle to enable them.
The ideal would be SMS. I know that is the most expensive option, but that is why it works. It’s too expensive for most spammers to use so users haven’t lost faith in it, and the notifications are on by default.
I would allocate pack funds to pay for this integration. I’m currently looking for third party tools to accomplish this for our families.
There have been discussions in other threads that many carriers are eliminating their email-to-SMS gateways (although I don’t know this with certainty myself). I think there was also some discussion about other pathways to SMS support (e.g. 3rd-party gateways), and potential hurdles for national in that regard, but I can’t find the thread I was thinking of with any of the details.
