Not sure if this is a bug or upgrade request

Hey All,

Hope this finds you well.

I ran into a problem where entering a completion date for a NOAA Camping Gold Device recorded the device as being earned before the base NOAA Camping segment.

For example, if the initial 25 camp nights were earned in October 2022 and the NOAA Camping was earned in January 2026 (after compleating the MB requirements); all of the cumulative camp nights recorded from October 2022 to Decamber 2025, would make all of the devices earned before the base NOAA Camping award.

Possible work arounds are to forward date the completion date or leave the completion date empty and just approve the device.

But these are not elegant solutions.

Could you please dissassociate the Completion Date field, rename it “Earned Date”, still have it recorded, and have the “Approved Date” fill in variable for the Completion Date in the routine(programming)?

This will help many active troops.

As always, thankfulness and gratefullness for all of your hard work.

John

The system is working correctly. A device cannot be earned or completed before the base award, even if all the requirements are met prior to the base award being completed.

This is no different than Eagle Palms. A Scout could have enough Merit Badges to earn an Eagle Palm prior to earning Eagle, however, the Eagle Palm cannot be marked complete or have a completion date prior to the completion date of Eagle.

It might be worth reaching out to your council advancement committee to see if they can get a clarification from national as to how they intend it to operate. I’ll be honest and say that I similarly would expect that the number of nights is not “additional” after having earned the Camping segment (i.e. not date-gated) but “additional” to the number of nights required (i.e. quantity-gated) to earn that segment.

The devices (and palms) are dependent on the base award - it is pretty simple. I scout that earns 100 MBs as a Star scout, but does not earn Eagle, does not get Eagle Palms. The Same is true for the NOAA awards.

maybe I do not understand - for NOAA a Night is a night - short term or long term it does not matter

“As defined in the requirements for the National Outdoor Awards Program, additional achievements in any of the six areas can be recognized by placing a gold- or silver-finish device on the appropriate activity segment.”

Perhaps this is what @Stephen_Hornak was pointing to - the “Additional” to the award - being the main point

@JohnSagami - i posted the link to the Scouting America page with the requirements. If your intention is to have the website that i linked changed then that must be routed via your council. My point was that the requirements on the site should match what is stated in scoutbook plus.

I understood this to be reporting a bug in how SB+ is currently behaving (i.e. automatically marking the additional devices Complete prior to the completion of the “base” segment). Did I understand this correctly?

I understood this to be a suggested way to resolve the current SB+ behavior. I didn’t quite follow what the options meant, though.

@JohnSagami ok if it is a pure when to start counting it is very simple - all the NOAA numbers are events under the Auspices of Scouting. So the Counts start even in Cub Scouts. You do not have to have the award for the Count to start. The Scout could get the Center Patch and the Camping Segment and and already have 2 Camping devices earned.

@JohnSagami - the completed date is what is presented to council/national. The approved and awarded are for local unit audit. The dates can be vastly different

@JohnSagami - I am not sure if Scouting America IT will entertain changing the database to suit what you are trying to do

It seems like it would be more straightforward to create a dependency in the code that the base award be earned (i.e. marked Completed) before the additional devices can be marked Completed. That way, the whole thing is handled behind the scenes, and scouts/scouters just get a pop-up that the added devices can’t be Completed until the base award has been Completed (or Completed and Leader Approved).

It’s already possible to enter the date(s) that the additional nights were accrued as a note in the comments for the award. However, the Completed date for the additional device couldn’t be any earlier than the date of the base device, and therefore would (properly) be the later of the date that the base device was earned or the date the the additional nights (or the relevant requirement for other NOA segments) were completed.

Keep it simple. Even though you can start counting the nights of Scout camping in Cub Scouts, the gold and silver devices cannot be completed / earned until after the segment is earned.

So using the National Outdoor Badge for Camping (segment) as an example:

If a Scout has 60 total nights of Scout camping (approved and under the auspices and standards of Scouting America) before earning the National Outdoor Badge for Camping (segment), then the National Outdoor Badge for Camping segment and gold device #1 for camping would be earned at the same time. The remaining 10 nights of Scout camping would go towards the next device. The Scout shouldn’t penalized for the timing of the camping.

@JohnSagami- the post from Jennifer is exactly how to handle this without database modification, adding rules or requirements. Over thinking it is not helpful to the scouts or scouters

@JohnSagami - i do not think you realize that the folks on the forums are volunteers and NOT part of the development team. They can not set priorities nor determine is something would be a fast easy thing to do nor allocate resources for said request.

Something idiots like me don’t have access to doing…

… trust me if I had access to open a ticket on SB directly, I would do that and not be wasting my time in a forum where I get feedback like this.

I know a scout/scouter is friendly, courteous, kind…cheerful; I’m working on it.

thanks Steven.
