PayPal Charging Incorrect Fee

Had a parent pay via the PayPal integration. The balance was $40.00, it tacked on the $1.95 for the fee but the net we recieved from PayPal was $39.37, showing the fee was $2.58. I have another Scout with a similar $40.00 balance and went to pay it to see what fee it would charge and it was the same $1.95 also.

@JeremyGinsberg

We used the integration with PayPal in Scoutbook; fees should adjust accordingly. The tool indicated in Scoutbook that we received $40.00 net, but in reality, we did not. Therefore, the integration is not functioning properly. We as units don’t have an ability to adjust the fee PayPal would charge.

@JeremyGinsberg might be Paypal changed the charge?? will have to check

@JeremyGinsberg - that is why i posted the link for merchant fees.. if paypal changed the fee structure that is not a Scouting America issue

Paypal is charging you alot - I wonder what form of payment was used - that effects some paypal charges.

The solution within Scoutbook doesn’t ask that question; payment type, before you get to this screen. You aren’t even logged into PayPal yet. The fee is predetermined at this point it seems.

@Stephen_Hornak - If PayPal changed the fees, it should reflect in the integrated function between Scoutbook and PayPal. As mentioned, as a Unit Admin, we have no control over adjusting the fees since this is an integrated function within Scoutbook.

@JeremyGinsberg- not sure that anyone on the forums can do anything about the pre and post transaction fees.

Think the issue here is being lost….

  • User clicks the PayPal button within Scoutbook
  • Scoutbook Screen showed a fee of $1.95 to total a transaction for $41.95
  • Scoutbook recorded a transaction from PayPal for net $40.00 ($40.00 + $1.95 fee)
  • PayPal Transaction differs, which is creating an unbalanced transaction for the unit; $40.00 vs $39.37 due to the actual charge from PayPal of $2.58 in a fee.
  • I have $0.63 unaccounted for. And this is ALL driven from the built-in integration between Scoutbook and PayPal.
  • Need to understand why the user is being told $1.95 in fees vs. the actual charge of $2.58 AND why Scoutbook is getting back incorrect data.

@JeremyGinsberg- nobody the forums has any insight into the paypal integration

I’m not exactly sure where to start on this, but I have asked the developers a question about how the PayPal fee of $1.95 was populated.

Thank you! @jacobfetzer

@JeremyGinsberg- i did find this calculator

it just does not add up - it was sent right and calculated right for a standard account - even if Paypal thought it was 41.95 they still took more out off the purchase than their standard fees.

As a Note: I would not use Paypal - I have known (and heard of more) a few units that lost all $$ in their Paypal accounts cause Paypal froze it thinking they were laundering money - and there was no recourse. We moved to Stripe where it just goes straight to our bank account.
