Previous MB version disappeared

One of our troop adults switched a Scout in error from 2016 requirements (started in 2022) for Cooking MB to 2025 requirements. As expected, the progress went to zero - which is the behavior I have observed when doing this in the past. However, I’ve previously been able to switch back to the previous requirements and recover the progress; in this case, only the 2025 and 2024 requirements are showing up in SB+, so I can’t recover the previous data. I can’t even access the MB in Legacy SB, I get the “Whoops! We encountered an error trying to process your request.
Please go to Scoutbook & Scoutbook Plus Bugs - Scouting Forums to report this issue.” error.

Is there a way to recover the Scout’s progress?

@EuanRamsay - perhaps one of these reports can get you the info you need

Alas, no. Since the requirements are now set to 2024, these reports only pull the 2024-relevant requirements (which are all incomplete).

What I really need is a way to get the 2016 requirements to be selectable in Scoutbook…

What about the Scout History report?

If you mean the “Scouts BSA History Report”, that only shows completed MBs. So far as I know, the Scout was not yet finished that badge. That’s why we’d like to recover the completed requirements, since she started under the previous requirements she should be able to finish with them.

I have had a similar issue with Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge. My scouts started the badge in early 2024 using the 2018 requirements, which were active active at the time. However, now that we have migrated over to SB+, we can no longer enter in completion date later than 12/31/2024 (the transition date of the new 2025 requirements). Per the Guide to Advancement - 2025, Section 7.0.4.3, “Scouts who have started work on a merit badge under the old requirements may finish using the old requirements.” SB+ does not appear to comply with the Guide to Advancement.

@EuanRamsay - you may want to look at the export/backup option in the troop menu, and as others pointed out the audit log data

Program approved this change of limiting to 2 - SUAC clearly mentioned 7.0.4.3 and were informed that it was changing. Program stated the scouts could still finish under the old requirements, it would just not have a digital tracking system, it would be pen and paper.

There is a known issue where the previous version (1 back from the current version only) cannot have dates entered after the expiration date (Jan 1 of the year of the new version.) The developers are working on a fix so that any date can be entered for the older version.

Watch Scoutbook - Scoutbook Plus Change Log - Scouting Forums for an announcement of a fix.

As Donovan said, the Scouts BSA Program Office has approved Scoutbook only tracking the current version and one version back. Scouts are still eligible to complete older versions of Merit Badges provided they were started before the next version became available. These older versions will need to be tracked manually and the completion date entered for one of the newer versions. The actual version only matters for tracking individual requirements. Once the MB is completed and approved, no one looks at the version.

I am happy to report this my issue was resolved last night and I am now able to sign off the 2018 Version of Emergency Preparedness (1 back from current version) with dates after 1/1/2025. Thank you.

Has this been corrected? My daughter is missing all her completed cooking merit badge requirements.

@JennieGalizia

You can find out what requirements were completed for old versions of Merit Badges by logging in to legacy Scoutbook (https://scoutbook.scouting.org) going to your daughter’s page, selecting Reports then selecting Scouts BSA History Report. The report will contain all completed requirements for her in progress merit badges.

If she is on a version of Cooking that is not the current or last version, you will need to track her progress outside of Scoutbook. When she has completed the Merit Badge you can mark any supported version complete. After a Merit Badge is complete, no one looks at what versions was finished.

Ed,

Thank you very much! This is super helpful. I knew this change was coming, but I guess I missed the announcements about older versions of merit badges not being seen in Scoutbook Plus.

@ChristineBradford if a scout was on an old Merit Badge Version - a Scout History Report for the Scout will show any entered requirements

@ChristineBradford do not post things with Personal data on ANY user please. This is an international forum

@ChristineBradford I see no evidence Scout ever started the cooking MB - but let me look around - 130929788

@ChristineBradford someone in unit deleted the MB on Saturday - we are seeing if it can be recovered

@ChristineBradford check that MB again please

Hello,
Thank you for your help

It is showing up now as completed for this one but not showing up his previously recorded individual requirements. Are those “lost”?
I have been e-mailing the merit badge counselor a bit today to help solve the mystery and it does sound like she was trying to enter requirements on the Saturday camp cooking outing for boys and was not expecting the challenge of not being able to see previous versions. And when trying to switch versions (which we now know cannot happen), she said it seemed like everything deleted. She also did not have the greatest service so she was not sure if that was the issue.

Switching versions is no issue - it takes 2 clicks to delete - Delete - are you sure you want to Delete. What was restored was all recoverable data.
