Welcome! This forum has a treasure trove of great info – Scouters helping Scouters! Just a heads up, though - all content, information, and opinions shared on this forum are those of the author, not the BSA.
I am receiving warnings for my account that say I need to authorize my connection with one of my children. This “child” is 20 and has not been in scouts for several years. How can I close his account? Will other things in my account be affected once this expiration date has passed?
There was a comparatively recent change in how parent/guardian connections to youth are made. Now, new adult connections to youth as a parent/guardian must be in the official Akela database, rather than just in Scoutbook (as was previously done by units for many parents whose connection did not automatically populate). This database entry is automatically done (at least in theory) whenever a parent is included on the youth application. However, differences in PII on the application (often use of nicknames or partial names instead of full legal names) sometimes results in non-matches. Starting in January (I think), all parent/guardian connections to youth must be via the Akela database. The warning is to get as many people correctly connected prior to the hard changeover to minimize impacts.
That’s the official membership database for Scouting America. It’s where the council registrars enter membership data. Only the registrar or other relevant council professionals have access.
There are instructions for how to confirm a connection to a youth in the warning message if I recall correctly.
I think everyone who has a non-Akela-confirmed connection to a potentially of-age youth (under 21) in the system is getting the warnings, rather than sorting by whether they are of-age for the program in which they were last registered.
Yes, It tells me to contact his unit. But he does not have a unit. I just wanted to verify that other aspects of my account will not be affected when that connection is not made.
