Scoutbook Legacy features that we still need in Scoutbook Plus

The list of features and functions which remain ONLY in Scoutbook Legacy is dwindling. (Hooray!!) But some of these are features which I have found invaluable, and want to make sure are on the list of feature requests for Scoutbook Plus.

  • Merit badge counselor menu (I already know you’re working on this)
  • Payments menu (I already know you’re working on this)
  • My Dashboard > Reports > Cub Scout / Scout BSA History Report - access a report on any Scout via member ID and last name, even if they’re not in your unit, or are not currently active - really comes in handy for Eagle Scout ceremony preparations when it’s been a while since the scout earned their Eagle rank
  • My Unit > Quick Entry > Start Merit Badges - bulk add “initial unit leader signature” for multiple scouts starting a MB at the same time, with ability to bulk-invite merit badge counselor - really comes in handy for summer camp preparations, merit badge fairs, and troop-wide merit badge activities
  • My Unit > Reports Cub Scout / Scout BSA History Report AND Scouts BSA Individual Advancement Record AND CS Advancement and Adventure Record - gives ability to bulk print .pdf reports for multiple Scouts, which is a feature our troop regularly uses to make sure scouts know exactly where they stand with advancement
  • Bulk Import Merit Badge Advancements (i.e. from Black Pug) - currently only usable in Chrome browsers with Scoutbook Feature Assistant extension installed
  • MB Counselor lookup - crucial for Scouts BSA Advancement Coordinators such as myself Edit - I now see this can be accessed as a report (in the roster menu) at my.scouting.org.
  • Any individual adult profile page > positions - ability to see past leadership positions and dates served in those positions - rare that I’ve needed this, but I have needed it on occasion
Edit - I now see this can be accessed as a report (in the roster menu) at my.scouting.org.

Again, THANK YOU, developers, for all that’s gone into this upgrade. It’s truly impressive and exciting that this list is now as short as it is! We appreciate you.

@GwendyDarling - the dev team is well aware of what needs to be migrated

This was never very reliable in legacy SB. A key 3 in a unit can pull up the unit unit advancement report (poor name) in my.scouting and it has this in a much more official manner.

If the Scout isn’t in your unit, or active, I don’t think this will be added as it provides a lot of info without any reason to have access. No?

Thank you, this was helpful. I think I found the report you’re referring to in my.scouting > roster > print > unit advancement details report. It does indeed show these position, so that satisfies this need just fine. Yay!

I wish that report was made available to the district key 3. I also wish they would rename it. It’s a neat history report, none the less.

Several times we’ve had scouts need to delay their Eagle ceremony for a few years due to college logistics. Parents and Eagles typically have lapsed memberships at that point, and haven’t had a practical way to access the Eagle’s past data for inclusion in a program or a slideshow or what-not. Top requests have included rank dates, list of merit badges, and positions held and for how long. Security shouldn’t be a concern, because the data cannot be accessed without knowing both their name and their member ID, and only trustworthy/authorized persons would have access to both pieces of info.

@Matt.Johnson Speaking of reports at my.scouting that I didn’t know existed… I see there is also a council merit badge counselor report there, and that it would function just fine in lieu of the merit badge counselor look-up in SB Legacy. So good to know!

And unlike the other, is available by district advancement resources and key 3.

@GwendyDarling- how about running that scouts bsa history report once they earn eagle and save the report. That’s now thinking. Additionally I do not think a no longer registered scout is entitled to wear the uniform or have any ceremony

This is an option that we could resort to, if needed, but it’s really not ideal. That’s why I posted the feature request here, to make sure developers know it’s still wanted and needed.

@GwendyDarling- how is it not the same as producing the pdf when they are a scout. But again for me not registered no ceremony

For any scout in my unit who is not going to re-up, we will zero out their financial account and save their records as a PDF. It is part of “closing out their membership” for future reference for us. We don’t know if we have any other record of their member ID, so this also saves it for us.

Speaking of reports I didn’t realize that existed in my.scouting.org… The “Non Renewed Membership Report” solves the problem of needing to look up any ID #s of former members. I just tried filtering by the oldest dates possible, and I was able to access info on members going back as far as 2000. That blew my mind! Our oldest unit was first chartered in 1999, so it’s conceivable that older units would have records going back even further.

@GwendyDarling - i just did a download of scout data for our troop which was charted in 1954 and the furthest back was 1999 which would be the scoutnet data. Records prior to that may or may not be in council archives. But i would doubt that as they can not locate my records from the 1970’s.

I find that one of the primary functions and features of Scoutbook and my.scouting.org is keeping information digitally on hand and available, so it can be immediately accessed when needed, by whoever needs it. Saving .pdfs to be accessed later, while a step up from saving paper records, still has the potential problem of data being misplaced or needing to be hunted down from the right person when needed. Like I said, it’s doable but not ideal.

Regarding no registration = no Eagle ceremony, this is the first time ever heard of that. Not arguing the position, but just pointing out that it’s apparently not an issue with our council, because it happens somewhat regularly. Since surely ours isn’t the only council to allow that, surely others would also find the ability to print a history/advancement report for past members useful.

@GwendyDarling - and it would be council not counsel. I would ask this.. can you enter advancement for an expired or non-registered scout ?

This is ridiculous - GTA clearly says a scout has 2 years with no special action to provide their Eagle Application. It sound like you are talking out of local tradition and not the GTA

And this has moved into policy so it will be closed
