YPT Refresher

I took the new YPT refresher 3 times this weekend and it never captured my completion, even though I can see the photo below that shows my training as complete. I really don’t want to have to take the full length especially since I spent an hour taking this refresher 3 times. Can someone help me update this please!?

@KellaSwift did you ever take the SYT course, not the old YPT course.

@KellaSwift

I checked your trianing record. You have never taken the full Safeguarding Youth Training. You will need to take the full course in order to have SYT appear current. The refresher course is only for those who previously compelted the full SYT.

I have taken the original YPT. I was a leader for 5 years and have a been a registered committee member for my current pack for the last 4 years. My last YPT just expired, 31 May so maybe that’s why it looks like I never took it. Ugh … alright guess I’m off to take the long version. :sob::sob::sob:

I guess not but I’ve been taking this training forever so I can’t imagine I haven’t but oh well. It’s just an hour, right …

@KellaSwift Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) replaced Youth Protection Training (YPT) around the middle of May last year (2025).

So if you haven’t taken the full 90 minute version of the new SYT training, then you need to take it first in order to get credit.

There is a major systemic issue with how expired training links are defaulting. When a Committee Member’s previous YPT expires, My.Scouting is defaulting their retake link to the 20-minute refresher instead of the mandatory 90-minute Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) course.

Because they haven’t taken the full SYT baseline course (which rolled out in May 2025), the system allows them to spend 20 minutes completing the refresher but fails to record or credit their completion. This is creating massive confusion across units and giving leaders false hope that their training is current. The default link for anyone lacking the full SYT baseline needs to be hardcoded to point strictly to the 90-minute SYT course.

@SaravananRamasamy Please contact your local council and ask them to submit a help ticket to National.

Hi Jennifer, This is how it is setup for the entire national system. The default is for the refresher. I expect BSA will have hundreds of volunteers become ineligible as a result of this. This is a major snafu right on the heals of the Scoutbook transition which was (and continues to be) an absolute disaster. God bless any volunteers who have been able to persevere. It honestly feels like national is actively trying to run people out of the program. I am very disappointed.

The reason Jennifer is pointing folks back to the local council is that the national team that supports training only takes bug reports from the council professional staff, not the SUAC volunteers.

There was a post in another thread that seems to indicate that this behavior has been resolved.

Had the same thing happen, I had to email council to figure it out. Here is what they sent that worked for me, because if you are like me, the training does NOT show up anywhere.

Totally miffed that the SUAC would direct us to speak with our councils when the cause of this issue is very clearly a BIG NATIONAL, PROGRAMMING OR SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT ERROR. If you can’t take the refresher because you did not take the full 90 version, why on earth would “the system” be programmed to allow you to take the refresher? Too many changes, some poorly tested & proven, then we wonder why we have issues with finding, training, and retraining volunteer leaders. Ready? Fire? Aim?

@MichaelHill11 - the team that handles the training and my.scouting.org work only takes communication from councils. That is why users are asked to work with council to enter member care tickets.

@MichaelHill11

The SUAC’s hands are tied here. We have been directed by Scouting IT management to direct members with issues with my.scouting.org to Councils to have member care tickets entered. As much as we would like to help and report issues with systems other than Scoutbook, we are not permitted to do so. We have tried multiple times to get the my.scouting.org team to accept feedback directly from SUAC members as we often already understand the issue and can communicate it more efficiently than a Council staff member can, but the team has rejected every request.

If enough councils complain about the inefficiency of this process, something may change, however, I suspect Councils do not see this as a high enough priority to push.

I agree. It is ridiculous that the 20 minute refresher course is the only link shown, when the system should know if the user has not taken the SYT training yet. If anything, they should show the full 90 minute course for the default link. Somebody in IT dropped the ball on this one.

We were told this was fixed earlier in the week and only those eligible to take the refresher see the link.
